Companies all jumped in to these trendy open office environments and this is the outcome. Can't say that's the case here but if I was a gambler I would say it is.
There have been numerous studies into this (easy to find on Google) that generally show open offices are a really, really terrible idea. I rarely go into the office because I find it so incredibly distracting to try to work there, which sucks because I really like my coworkers and the office is beautifully appointed. 😕
Bring them a loud speaker and tell them you couldn't hear them from the next floor.
I would skip subtle. I would tell them… “I don’t know if you realize this, but your zoom meetings are very loud. Can you lower the volume?”
Agreed nothing wrong with being direct
Hey, would you mind lowering the volume a tad?
Used to have a coworker pre covid when we were on cubicles who would basically have a very projected voice and it could be heard and annoy like 20 people around him. Somebody would make jokes about it but nobody would have the balls to be like can you take all these meetings in another conference room? You’re disturbing this whole area for months and causing lack of productivity.
Join in on the conversation! 😆
And especially when he asks “Can you guys hear me?”, make sure you reply “YES I CAN. AND TRHE WHOLE DAMN AREA TOO.”
Start using YOUR outside voice 😬😅
I’d mention that it’s hard to focus on my work during his zoom meetings and ask him to start hosting them in another part of the office.
If him moving is not a possibility, I’d ask him to be more mindful of the volume and hopefully he would remember bc moving is a more conscious change
Let them know how to raise the output volume so they don't have to speak as loud and "preserve their voice."
Some guys are just loud talkers- doesn’t matter if they’re on Zoom or the phone.
Clarity beats subtlety
I’m a recruiter & spend a lot of time on the phone. I sit in a cubicle area…I’ve always had my own private office up to now…and my boss’ office is just on the other side of the corridor next to my cubicle. She’s told me I talk loud…so I’ve tried to tone it down. But I can’t help if my voice carries since she’s only like 7 feet away. It’s not an ideal arrangement for anyone & frankly I hate working in a fishbowl.
I see what you did there.
The beauty of hybrid work
Nothing comes to mind.
“Hey, quiet down you’re yelling.” Hahaha or if probs say “hey, you have bad hearing? Shhhhhh.” 🤣😂🤣
This is why I bought noise canceling headphones for work. If it was distracting to the point that someone I was talking to could hear them I would ask them to lower their voice at a later time in private.
Same here. We’re also on same calls from time to time - so I hear this person twice!! My brain is literally shutting down and can’t process anything
Are they’re no meeting rooms in your building? This doesn’t sound good
I would suggest a nicer headset or earpiece whatever. I work from home and when I go into the office it’s so loud, but when I pop on a nicer headset I can’t hear my coworkers and ppl on the phone can’t hear them
And when you’re on a call with headphones, you can talk really loudly and let the coworker listen to everything in the one-sided conversation. That is the worst part, because a listener’s brain spends cycles trying to fill in the other side they can’t hear.
Some people are so focused on tasks, etc., that they often aren't aware that they could be disrupting others' work, whether it's Zoom sessions, conference calls, tapping a pen on a table while thinking. Help them out by making them aware of what they might not be aware of. Most people will thank you if you deliver the feedback with care.
Get him promoted so he gets his own office 😂
Omg is his name Ed?
