Mentor
I’m in Medtech and the it’s an interesting mix where the global PMs push global PMMs around, then the global PMMs try to push around the country PMMs as a result. Only to have the country level teams clap back by saying “I love that you’ve done all this work, but our customers don’t need this product and we don’t have budget to push out your marketing plan.”
Sounds like it sucks to be a global PMM
Great question and I feel like besides company to company, it also varies depending on who you’re working with.
At my company, our XFN leaders encourage us to treat the PMs like royalty and it only empowers them to continue to be inconsiderate. I don’t understand why
Product managers generally have 0 direct line authority to their teams, that means they have no choice but to lead with influence.
It sounds like your leadership is doing the right thing by trying to empower them but they might just be shitty PM’s. Try some radical candour and give them this feedback. The ones who are on the road to being good PM’s will receive genuine feedback positively.
Although I wonder how empowered they really are, is leadership telling them what to do and they just do it or is the team discovering the right initiatives together?
