Have you already had the meeting? If you haven't I'd frame it as "i'm happy, but I want to make sure i'm taking every opportunity to be proactive when it comes to advancing my career, and that's what i'm trying to do" and find out from them what opportunities for growth they can provide. But be sure to frame it less as "i'm bored and want to move up fast" and more "i'm happy, but i'm also eager to learn and grow and get everything out of my career here as I possibly can".
Thanks Guys! I thought it was bizarre as well. The meeting happened already. I said it was a misunderstanding. I wanted to be proactive and most importantly I truly believed that I had a green light from my job. The most bizarre thing is that never really had a conversation about it with my boss but I had It directly with HR. I also did not appreciate the fact they did not give me at options. I thought I was being punished for being proactive. Very weird...
To me, it sounds like your boss is threatened OR doesn’t want more than a certain level from you. So they’re having HR sound out want you want.
Yeah, it's weird-you're not wrong there. Sounds like your boss might not be the best at talking with subordinates. I'd check my boss's calendar and find a significantly open spot. Then I'd ask him/her (in person) if they have a few minutes to chat privately. I'd start out the conversation with a smile and a, "So I had an odd chat with HR the other day...and since you're my supervisor, I'd like to get your take on it."
Then tell your boss about the conversation, and be honest about what you do/do not want in your current position, and your career.
This sounds like some projection, with your boss and HR dancing around whatever topic actually needs to be discussed. Keep the conversation open and as light as possible, but pin down what they're getting at, so you can all be on the same sheet of music.
@senior art director 1 I am thinking (a lot) about this. At first I was certain that I needed to talk to my boss. Then, I thought, as you said, for a dance, I need two. My boss did not want to talk to me. Not sure if it is helpful to try to force it. Maybe better just pretend this never happened and try to move at least for now, since I am not thinking about getting a new job soon.
That happen after I actively tried to participate in a senior leadership project, with mixed message ok from my boss.
This is bizarre. Did they offer up any suggestions? Like they want to advance you? They want you to take on special projects? I just have no idea what the point of them saying this would be. Small chance they couldn’t afford you in 6 months, but I seriously doubt that
Clearly, they want your position to be not a senior leadership one, take it as a choice— accept this is a lower position or ask to be more senior, knowing it may mean getting let go
*green light from my boss
The fact that your boss went to HR with it rather than discussing the matter with you first is what's truly fucking weird (and dysfunctional). They both have partners (each other) and they're dancing around you. You don't know what the dance is, and whether it's good or bad. You can act like it never happened, but it did, and it's a harbinger of things to come.
If this joker is just going to go to HR with his/her concerns about your performance/goals/whatever, without discussing anything with you, the next discussion you're likely to have is with HR, and it'll probably be about your severance package.
Clearly you know your situation best. But just because your boss didn't want to talk with you doesn't mean he/she shouldn't have. If you're not part of the conversation, they'll come-up with answers without your input, and make decisions accordingly. JMO-good luck.
