Well salary bands for AD in your market are probably 120-150, and with nine years of experience, you’re not going to be as experienced as most people at the top of that band. However, if you’re genuinely the account lead on two of your agencies big healthy accounts, then you can/should make the argument that you’re performing at a level above AD (whatever that is at your agency: Sr AD, VP or GAD). And if you have the responsibility of that level, you should have the title and compensation of that level, which is probably more in the range of 150-220.
I was at $175k recently before moving into a different type of role. 9 YOE, 1 big client, managing 5-6 people, 150-person agency, LA.
Your role honestly sounds more like a GAD though, so I'd say $200-250k in a big market.
I’m making shy of $140k in LA.
Hi!
Here’re some points to keep in mind:
- Before talking to your manager and making your case, think about all the value you’ve brought to the company so far, all the achievements you’ve accomplished, all contributions you’ve made to the Team... think about as many facts as possible that would back up your reasoning behind wanting & deserving the raise. This is such an important point you don’t want to skip. If you´re not “sold” on the idea of why you should get that raise – it will be veeery hard to communicate that with anyone else.
- Come up with the salary amount you’d like to propose that you think is fair for both sides. If you feel like you need to “justify” your salary amount, remember -> you´re giving your time, your knowledge, your value… you´re contributing greatly to the business; you´re working hard for it.
- Schedule a meeting with your Manager. Once in a meeting, start your conversation by sharing your feedback: what´s been working well, what´s been working not thaaaat well, what could be done differently and open up the discussion to future plans & goals you´d like to discuss.
- Go through your points and wrap that part up by asking your Manager what do they think? Based on all you’ve shared so far, how do they want to proceed? Depending on their answer, the conversation will go in this/that direction (message me, we can discuss this point further).
- Make sure to leave the meeting with a concrete “what’s next?” plan, deadlines and a follow up meeting.
With regards to the salary, what do you think is the “fair” compensation? Did you do some research - what does the market say?
Hope this helps & wish you all the best! :)
Btw, if you’d like to discuss further, feel free to message me/connect on LI.

Let them know you love the company and culture, but subtly hint that your worth extends beyond your current offer. This is a delicate dance. Appreciation without desperation.
