I don’t know if they can do that legally. I’m also bipolar so I can certainly sympathize. Sorry you’re going through such a rough time.
Thank you I appreciate it. I’m scared the coming back will be worse.
Forget the legal, think practical. I thought I had a legit age discrimination case, but attorneys don’t see those as winnable. Race and gender discrimination cases are profitable. I think physical disability cases would be easy to argue, mental not so much considering the crucial role of judgment and other intangibles. If they wanted to get rid of you, they will. If you’re a valued contributor (you bill out 3X more than your salary) they will find a way to keep you. The generous policies of big firms are only meant to give risk-averse middle managers the cover to act like decent human beings. Do what you have to do for yourself. If you don’t know that you will be welcomed back by your current group, try to find another home within the firm willing to support your PTO/ leave for treatment. Transfer to them and take your leave before starting full time. You will not have as many questions about your break. If you can’t be sure that you will be treated generously, line up another job. Life’s too short to spend so much of it working for a*holes.
There is protection under FMLA. And, you don’t have to disclose to your group why. You go to HR and ask for FMLA paperwork, and short term disability paperwork which usually determines that you’ll get paid, etc. HR can’t describe the nature of your treatment to anyone. All you need to say to your group is that you have a medical issue and will require leave for treatment. They can’t ask you anything else, and FMLA is what protects your job
Are you taking leave? Why would they coach you out?
Unless you pissed off a client, taking time off to take care of your health is none of their business.
You are your number 1 client. Gotta take care of yourself so that you can take care of others.
I got my snapshot today and it was really good so I think I was overreacting
Not so sure that advice is 100% correct...
Putting yourself into treatment might be considered the same as elective surgery. If it’s not doctor ordered / prescribed then you might not have protection in federal laws. I’d definitely check on this before you make a decision
