Outside of targeting niche fields in SCM; etc medical,CPG,IT etc, the best way to stand out in the current job market is to have a MS/MBA, coupled with certifications
Along with proven data/coding skills
Any insight on certifications that are valuable?
Focus on your problem solving skills and any project management or project coordination you’ve done. At the core, SCM is about solving problems. Also Excel skills are a huge boost. While a lot of companies are starting to use more SQL/Python to do their data analysis, Excel is still very much in use. Depending on your location you may have to network hard because in some cases SCM is still very much about relationships.
As for certs, you can get a Six Sigma cert if you want. CSCP or CPIM are great if you are in manufacturing SCM. Any experience with an ERP like SAP, Oracle, or QAD is invaluable. My personal opinion is that an MBA isn’t necessary for SCM.
