I’ve had a real unconventional career, but ended up where I needed to be when I needed to be there.
Graduated with a degree in graphic design and waited out the ‘08-‘10 economic collapse at an apparel company.
Mom got cancer, and I took a sabbatical to do a peace corps type thing, ‘cause I feel things sometimes fall into place and you forget your problems when you serve others.
Came back after a couple years, got an agency job, moved around, was then terminated last year after only a few months at a place. Am now somewhere that pays me decent and am working on my book for a step up.
My hope in sharing all of this is that you can have the confidence knowing you will bounce back. It can be tough since many places are on hiring freeze, but keep taking freelance gigs and see how you can better your book. Look at agencies you want to work at and think of how you can make their current campaigns better. Do spec or anything to stay sharp. Play a video game or see a movie/play if you have to.
Everything will work out. Please keep us posted.
OP so sorry. My recommendation if you are in your 20s or early 30s is to get out of this industry. It’s only going to continue to contract and shrink until it is a fraction of the size it is now. Jobs aren’t coming back. Since you are in LA you need to shift your focus to working at Google, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix etc. Even the entertainment studios have better prospects than advertising . Get out as fast as you can while you have little overhead and are young enough to pivot quickly.
Man I probably needed to hear this. I was laid off and have the option to go client side as an Brand Manager but I fear it’ll suck since I’m not the most organized.
Focus on self improvement. Sharpen your craft any way you can. Sometimes it takes setbacks to get better.
I have 7 years of agency experience before I took non agency/small business freelance clients for few years. My last agency experience was for almost a year before I got laid off last month. I also turned 40 last month. I love being creative and I love advertising. It is very difficult for me to even think about leavening advertising and not being creative.
@Executive producer 1 I love to get in to entertainment side and I applied to most of the companies you mentioned above, they all said no and they said that they need to see entertainment client/work in my book in order to consider me for interview.
OP take freelance with LA production shops that focus on entertainment like Trailer Park
Thank you so much for all of your comments and feedback. It means a lot to know that you understand what I am going through and offer advices to help me out. It is also good to know that there are lots of good people in advertising. Please keep the advices coming. 🙏
You got this! Please talk to someone. Being depressed and out of work over the holidays can be tough.
I was taking care of a family member that was going through cancer so I decided to freelance (non agency small clients) for few years to help out . My last job was a at a small ad agency and my hope of getting back to the agency life in LA. Now I got laid off I am very worried. Do you think there is any hope? I contacted almost any agency in La, and so far no respond. :(
Have you considered doing any pro bono work as a side project to beef up your portfolio? I’ve yet to meet a charity who didn’t want free work, and a portfolio that didn’t want some cool nonprofit work in it
Advice: ask for coffee, not a job. Ask what “needs” those companies have, then use your free time to get those skills via online classes like LinkedIn Learning. Read reports on the state of the industry to determine what skills you need to develop. If no one is returning your calls, then you need to reposition your value to companies. And, work on networking. Go to a Meetup or industry event to meet others. Most people get jobs by knowing someone, research shows about 70% of ppl get their job through someone. And let’s face it, most companies don’t post all their jobs despite being EEOC or diversity leaning. In other words, pivot.
Thank you!
Thank you for talking to me.
