If Google (or any other company) was truly committed to diversity and equality, they would simply hire only the people they needed to until they balanced the scales. Anything else is BS theater.

I think diversity in tech is a moot point, hiring should be driven by skills not gender. However, once hired, everyone should have a level playing field

like

They're committed to diversity. Not discrimination. What you're talking about is discrimination OP.

Pc1 I disagree. I know women from the Ivies and Stanford who have had a hard time through the Google interview process. It is most certainly a case of valley bros having an easier time of it.

like

I'm tempted to make a completely rational and pragmatic comment on this matter, but I won't since the fb Mafia will label me as a bigot / heretic / racist rather than engaging in healthy debate on how to get to the heart of the matter and solve for equality and diversity (hint: googles weak public lip service isn't the answer)

The disparity in CS education stems from cultural perceptions of gender personified at an early age, not anything google is doing. Prior to the 1980s, women in CS were not just common, they were integral. A women created the A programming language, which is an early ancestor to C which nearly everyone, globally, touches on a daily basis. When computer gaming came about in the 1980s, a computer became a 'boy toy' and thus in early CS courses in college, men had more experience coming in. I saw this first hand as someone who minored in CS. 80% of those who succeeded in intro to programming had programmed before. We need to fix early programming education and stop the stigma of people who can't code. I'm self taught and I can tell you programmers are some of the most arrogant gatekeepers around

like

D2 I would be willing to hear out the perspective of the Google guy. However, I have seen women in top PhD programs in CS (think Stanford/ Berkeley) being treated poorly by male academics both at conferences and during interviews.

like

There is a difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome.

The letter the Google employee wrote was pretty terrible and while there are certainly issues, Silicon Valley is more the outcome of educational choices/inequity than the cause.

like

Yeah OP because the key to equality is saying fuck everyone else until everything is even. That's almost as dumb of an idea as the article in huffington post about taking away white males right to vote so that white males can feel what it's like to be oppressed. The author said 20 years of oppression for white males should be sufficient so that everyone else can get ahead and then we can all be equal.

like

I read the 10 pager and there was about 70% of the content that was just plain, generally accepted thought on biological dispositions, etc..... however he said a few things that's he is rightfully getting raked over the coals for

I majored in MIS and engineering, I am a white guy but was the minority in most of my classes which were mainly Indian/Chinese/Japanese. This was well over a decade ago but I suspect not much has changed.

So they were diverse but it was less than 5% female in the classroom.

This is going to take time to balance the overall dynamic of male/female graduates.

Coding also isn't that difficult to do and should be required just like any other language...

Do you see lot of woman who code? I haven't so far in all these years.

The reason there aren't too many women, is because women are simply not interested. Coding by itself is a tremendously inward facing and honestly boring exercise, while women seem drawn to careers in marketing, advertising or consulting since they are more people facing

My wife is a programmer and the discrimination is a real thing. Anything otherwise said is largely due to the male ego being hurt or feeling insecure. Simple as that.

You don't just hire to balance the scale - a)there's no unlimited positions, b)not all skills are available at all time

PwC2 thats great but I haven't seen many. For some reason the closest I have seen is like an architect or pmo. Non technical people becoming an architect or head of IT is a lot of pain to work for. My experiences have not been great.
Anyway coming back to google. Forcing people just by affirmative action will not get shit done. You would still need the actual person with skills to do the work ( men or woman) .

K2- the question arises when you hire a man instead of a woman just because he is a man. A lot of shortcomings get overlooked when it comes to a man but a lot of minor issues are shown as serious shortcomings when you are a woman. And I am man. But I have seen this kind of stuff happen to my wife quite frequently. It's nauseating.
