I’m 25, and thinking of doing a temporary move to London from NYC for 2 years, my salary would be cut from $115k to £45k. Is this a mistake if I would like to FIRE?

2 years due to the HPI opportunity, which is a 2 year work visa

You’ve very young and life experiences are important. Working in an international market could enrich your resume. Fire aside, can you survive on £45k ($69k) salary in London? Have you done the math and looked at the housing costs within commutable distance to your office? There are salary calculator online to figure out the taxes etc. London is expensive, think NYC prices but with 69k salary. Housing is a bit more affordable but still, do the math.

like

😳

Financially, absolutely. I was recently in London and it's expensive, especially considering the much lower salary.

like

Look at what this does for your future earning potential. And also it's not all about nickels and dimes... Two years does not mean you can't come back and focus on fire later.

like

2 year should be fine as long as you can find a well-paid position back in the US later. I started investing from my 30 with a just OK pay and I’m still on the track.

like

You’re 25… live your life, you’ll probably never have that opportunity again and you’re worried about FIRE goals this early in your career? Way too many unknown variables to worry about that. Maybe start with getting into a career you actually enjoy vs already finding a way out a couple years out of school. Fwiw sounds like a very cool opportunity overall

like

If that's enough to live on in London and if the job can expand your professional network or teach you some new skills that can improve your career later, then go. You would be investing some of your missed NY salary in potential career growth.

UK person here… that’s a little tight in London. Expect around £1-2k in rent depending on your standards and if you’re willing to share, a chunk off in taxes (would you be double taxed?), plus the whole point of living in London is to enjoy everything it has to offer! I didn’t start saving in earnest until my salary reached £60k and I moved out of London to the Home Counties (commuter belt around London). But also, the salary cut seems severe… I would say London salaries are more like 3/4s of US… could you negotiate up to £60-70k (and definitely ask for relocation costs if you weren’t already planning to).

like

I think it’s better to keep your current salary and take the guaranteed leave of absence and go hang in London or Europe for three months

like

You can use a fire calculator to see what the impact would be- given you’re young, it likely wont make a huge difference to your timeline (assuming of course you go back to the US on a high salary and accelerate savings)

If you're playing to stay at Accenture then I wouldn't bother unless there's faster career progression there (doubtful). I haven't seen consistent benefit at Accenture for international experience except for ones where there's a salary increase or leadership moving to take a promotion.

The smarter move is getting promoted in NYC and then moving to a LCOL where you keep your NYC salary.

The thing is it’ll be hard to find a job that’s only for 2 years on the visa, I don’t know if companies are willing to take that risk to hire someone for only 2 years. Staying at ACN gives me the flexibility to live in London and be employed still

That's too low for London

Seems to me like everything makes sense except that's way too big a cut. You can definitely give up some salary at 25 for that kind of experience, but that sounds like living meager. If you can negotiate the salary up by like 30% at least, go for it.

You can earn a lot more than that in London

Don't settle for 45k, get a better job then move

I will try to do that, but unfortunately it’s only a 2 year visa so it might be challenging

Will they do the salary cut and then give you subsidies for housing? No tax on housing subsidies overseas. Otherwise, that’s a huge paycut - live like a pauper in NY for six months and then spend 6 months traveling England and Ireland. Bridge 2 tax years with your travel (Sept-Mar) to stay in lower tax brackets both years. Avoid horrific busy season for one full year.

Definitely no subsidies because this would be a self initiated transfer unfortunately

My year in London was life changing at 28. I was making £85k but would’ve done it for less

So pls do not look at kyndryl as any other startup.Thanks.

Hi, what kind of salary should I expect from London consultancies with 1 year experience as an Analyst at Accenture?

I’m working in analytics with some currently in Python and R, and some AWS exposure with the cloud fundamentals cert (which doesn’t mean much I know 😂) and would be looking for a similar data-focussed role.

If anyone knows of any open roles and would be happy to do a referral etc then please also let me know.

Thanks 😊

Hi everyone I am relocating to Hyderabad next month. Even though I look forward to meeting new people I can’t seem to ignore the fact that I will move away from family. My family situation is already complicated, my mom and dad are not on good terms so we don’t live together and when I move it’ll get worse. I am financially independent but I feel guilty for not being there for them. Is there any possibility of getting transferred to Gurgaon office(a lot closer to my home)if I talk to my manager?

Hey All,
I finished a third round interview, and HR contacted me that afternoon saying I had positive feedback across the board and they would contact me the next day regarding next steps. It’s been two days and they finally get back to me saying they haven’t been able to sync with the hiring manager but will keep me posted. Honestly I wish they would talk with the hiring manager and then let me know the decision instead of checking in. It’s messing with my emotions.
