Depends on the firm I think. I am a first year and have my nose pierced (and two piercings on both ears) and don’t think I get any sideways looks. I had it when I interviewed. If you’re at an SF firm with a big tech practice (and the more laid back culture that comes with it) then IMO it’s probably fine.
Easy to say this with a job but folks told me to take it out when interviewing to “be safe” and I drew the boundary for myself that I wouldn’t want to work somewhere that a nose piercing was going to count against me.
I personally wouldn’t, just to be safe. But it really depends on your office culture. The moment you see another associate with a nose ring, go for it. But as a first year I’m very risk averse and would try my best to blend in.

A partner at my DC firm made our secretary remove her nose ring. 🤷🏻♀️
Do it.

Agree with A2. I think being based in SF, this is fine. Even in NYC (where I am based) most firms wouldn’t have an issue here, but there are some curmudgeonly partners that would not approve thinking that they couldn’t put you in front of a client. Still, I don’t think it would materially affect your career at all.

It will raise eyebrows, but I think it’s less of an issue for the time being because you’re a first year associate. More of an issue as you get more senior because you will be more client facing.

Does your firm have a dress code policy? A lot of them are outdated, but they could still ask you to take it out because of their policy
No dress code policy! (I’ve been wearing jeans and a cotton long sleeve tucked in with flats)
I worked big law in San Francisco with many colorful characters of all gender. No one will care or notice as long as you’re reasonable about it (not in a court appearance and not for certain client meetings, etc.).
I’m a male with ear piercings and the only comments people have made are positive. It’s possible some will judge behind your back but who cares.
Thank you all, this is very helpful!
