Product counsel and litigation are completely different. I wouldn’t assume you are qualified for the job, just like a product counsel wouldn’t be qualified to be a litigator - just something to keep in mind.
Makes sense, that’s why I’m trying to figure out how to best leverage the client connection to make that transition.
Reach out to the partner who has the closest relationship and could talk you up. Firms love embedding associates at clients. My firm has an internal in-house job board and specifically says "reach out to [partner] if you're interested in applying for this position." Don't be afraid of looking like you have one foot out the door or something. You are taking control of your career and that's a universally good thing.
Thanks! I feel like if it doesn’t work out it would be particularly awkward. I also have less experience than the position requires so not sure if that’d make a big difference.
Do you fit the job description at all? I can’t see a litigator being competitive for a product counsel role so I’m curious if you actually fit the requirements. If you don’t, or not most of them, I’d refrain.
Echo others thoughts, but I’d recommend perhaps pitching your litigation experience of examine issues/risks related to the company’s operations or products to be a strength, which you would rely on to give product advice. It may not be the strongest pitch, but I thought it may help! Good luck!
Don’t talk to the partner unless you’re willing to be given the walk, it’s too risky. I would reach out to the person at the company that you worked with, ask for an opportunity to connect and learn more about what their job is like day to day, and use that to tee up an opportunity where they invite you to apply.
Litigation is not usually where companies look to hire for product counsel. I might tell the client you might have a referral and ask if they’d consider a litigator. Then if yes you say well actually I’m interested and if no then okay I’ll tell my buddy not a fit
