Relationships are going to be huge in an alternative school. They need to know they can trust you and that you are there for them before they’re really ready to learn from you. I think that you’re probably doing the right thing it just feels weird.
I thought everything was going great at the beginning of the year but then they got rowdier and I got more stressed and now they’ve just written me off forever.
Stay consistent with your expectations so that they have solid structure that they can trust won't change, and lead with your heart. I know it can be hard but try to be patient and firm. The year isn't over yet! They will come around ❤
I’ve been in your shoes. I must say being professional while also showing them empathy and that you’re human too goes a long way.
This is a hard place but you got this! You gotta build relationships. That is the most important. They feel betrayed by whatever. System, family, friends and etc. You have to be there rock. Someone they can look up to and know that they can do this whole thing called life. You got this!!!!
They are watching you very closely. Make sure that any disciplinary action is consistent and fair. Having a good sense of humor goes a long way, too. Makes them feel comfortable around you.
At this point some of them have already made up their minds about me and won’t budge, but some just bow to peer pressure. I’m letting it roll off my back
2) a lot, so if I can hang in there it’ll be okay, but is this approach too passive? This setting is just a lot different from what I’m used to.
They WILL come back to you. The safer you feel to them is too frightening for many students. Pushing you away is part of the unconscious plan. You can’t abandon them if the abandon you first. Do Not take this personally. You’re doing great!!!
