I’m getting frustrated - the last 10 yrs I have attempted to get my foot in the door at the bug4/big tech as a consultant or PM on the IT side of things. I have an b.comm in MIS, have led implementations of saas platforms (Workday/Smartsheet), support, Devops hold my PMP. My skillset is wide and even friends who are directors/principals are impressed by my resume, but I can never get an interview from any of these places. Wtf am I doing wrong? I have internal & SaaS vendor exp. I’m from Toronto

Sounds like your resume needs work. I realize you’ve done work on it already but clearly that’s not getting you the interviews. Might want to look into a resume service. Sounds like you also need more referrals. Also, have you been networking with your target companies? Friends who work at target companies would also be very useful in connecting you with individuals to do coffee chats with. You need to expand your network in those fields.

You have to see the humor in things. Otherwise, game over.

Have someone look at your resume. I was struggling getting interviews. A colleague asked to look at my resume and they noticed I was being too broad. After a bunch of tweaks, I had offers to choose from.

Having someone give feedback on my resume helped with getting past the screening process.

like

Maybe your resume needs to be more specifically tailored to the role you’re applying to? Sometimes a wide skillset can seem like you’re decent at a lot of things but not an expert in the role you’re going for. Role levels at 10 YOE may be looking for more specific expertise

helpful

Agreed - since I’ve been in roles like an app specialist, technical account management, PM, portfolio planning and tech support, I’ve been told I should target a cloud delivery lead type role. Not sure how a resume like that looks?

If you’re willing to move I can refer you in the US. If not, is there someone else in Toronto willing to refer?

Can you get the friends to help you get hired?

I’ve used their names for places like PwC and Salesforce and no luck. I’ve tried both Canada and the US

What does your resume look like? Maybe it’s poorly written

To you both - I have had multiple individuals in associate partner/VP and director roles do this and used Jobscan. They said the resume looks great. Jobscan matches could be a bit better - I almost need someone who would specialize in this. I feel it’s the screening - I know once I’m past that I can speak to my skills and experience confidently as I can naturally build a relationship quickly.

Are you talking client service or internal IT?

If you want a referral, just DM. I feel the pain and applied for years before I got in. Also, cyber is *desperate* for people, if you have done anything security related.

You’re not missing out on much lol but CIOA (IT consulting) at KPMG US is looking for talent! Happy to refer.

I’m a designer in the planning/landscape architecture dept. of a CE firm. Extremely frustrated that after 4+ years and multiple asks, I’m not getting the in-field construction experience I’ve asked for. I know that my designs could be better if I could see how things are actually built but I get slapped in the face with “I need you in the office designing/drafting” or “there’s no budget to have you go out” and then sends an intern to inspect instead. I’m 5 yrs out of college. Any advice?

Sanity check. Going to preface this by saying I'm not in a rush. I wanted to get some good consulting experience so joined EY out of UG. Got early promo, but I've reached the point where I'm no longer growing (learning) much on my current team. I've become very interested in PE and want to give that a shot. I lack the resume experience.

Thinking to move within EY to an M&A focused group SaT or EYP. Do ~2 years and see if I still want that. Will that tick the box for most PE shops?

I had my Assessor interview this past week and received a pre-screening questionnaire that asked about dual citizenship status. Finally found THE one, after over a year of searching and trying out at least 5 different ones!

A nice comfortable office chair.

https://ergochair.co/collections/chairs/products/ergonomics-mesh-chair-w-adjustable-headrest-and-armrest?variant=32511617597491

My criteria: mesh seat and back, arms, headrest

I tried cheap ones from Amazon. Expensive, second hand gaming chairs. Tried HM Aeron (second hand) and while I didn't like the bulk and the general design, I was sold on the mesh seating. I wanted to get the ErgoChair 2 from autonomous, but it doesn't have mesh seat.

AMA.
