Is a masters of Engineering management worth it? Obviously a lot of factors here including which university, cost and such. I’m looking to move into management and I feel like getting this degree part time over the next 2 years could make me more effective as a candidate and in the actual job. Does anyone have this degree and have thoughts or a program they recommend?

No, I don’t expect it to be taken as a big value add if you lack the real-world experience

Gotcha! Thank you for replying!

I don’t see it as helpful, I am an IC with a BS in Engineering Management making $170,000 and on track to promote to management in the next 3 years. No MS necessary. Only degree I would go for at this point is would be one that the Sr. Leaders said I need to get to make it to the VP level, outside of that having a BS and working hard will get you where you want to go.

Get the masters, you will learn more and will look good in your resume. My younger brother has a bachelors and masters in computer science. He wanted to pursue mechanical engineering degree . I recommended him to get some liberal arts education unless he pursues a Phd. He easily finds jobs after finishing his masters. I would recommend learning cross disciplines like computer bachelors and mechanical engineering masters or even law. It helps a person to think differently and better.

No, i have one. Don't waste your time and money. Do an MBA and courses on technical stuff and that's it. It'll be better i promise

It depends on your career path. It’s definitely not more valuable than real-world experience, but if you’re going to go into a career that heavily deals with Big Data or Data Science, then a Masters (or even PhD) will be valuable when searching for jobs.

There are a couple of tracks for management, and getting more education around them is helpful. You can work in the technical side of the house or go into the business side of it. If you like the technical and want to focus on functional team operations, quality, and project management then an eng mgmt degree is well suited to help you grow. If you want to move to the bus side, then skip it. Pursuing an MBA is going to better prepare you.
Grad certs can cover focused learning at lower cost too.

I have a MS in Engineering Management, but it's a true industrial engineering one. The managerial finance and new product development definitely help if you're running a department, and the PM skills I learned there made life easier.

The rest was statistics and process/quality control and stuff I enjoyed, but less applicable in a software engineering context unless you are talking about ML.

You could substitute most of that degree with industry-specific certs (PMI, SAFE, Coursera, etc.) and be fine, but the knowledge is worth it in my experience.

Some additional context I’m realizing I left out- I’m a software engineer with ~8 years as an IC. I have a bachelors in CS and my top choice right now would be Duke’s Masters of Engineering management that seems to have some good courses on management within technical orgs as well as data analysis for management and a few other things. I have experience as a technical lead for large scale processes (building out data pipelines, working with vendors, establishing new paradigms for syncing data within our existing architecture). At my current company, I’m supposed to be up for promo to Senior Eng this cycle and I’m looking at this degree part time while I continue to get IC experience.

Get the MBA, in my experience, no one really appreciates/ understands the masters in engineering management

When would be the right time for me to get an MBA given my background?

I was a teacher for 4 years and transitioned into the corporate world. I have 6 months experience in marketing and that’s what I currently do, but plan for a lateral move in the future. I’ve seen suggestions of 3-7 years experience - does my teaching experience factor in? Or should I consider the 3-7 years only of my corporate time? Or is an MBA sooner a good move because of my big career transition (and future lateral)?

Have any of you had trouble getting interviews at startups due to them wanting more startup experience? I've worked on many greenfield projects for clients and more mature projects, so I'm not sure why I wouldn't be a good candidate. The funny thing is when you look at the bios for some of these founders and see just how inexperienced many of them are. One's bio was basically the list of clubs he belonged to in college.
