Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I think Seattle is overall more expensive. I live in DC area. Though we bought our house years ago and no idea how anyone can afford buying right now either here or in Seattle. Anyway, don’t just consider COL. Seattle is a nice place too so maybe it’s worth it. And possibly long term salary prospects could be better? Who knows. It’s not just about the money.

Overall COL is lower in Seattle, yes
I’ve lived in both places in the last 3 years. When I moved to Seattle, I was not given an increase. Housing appears slightly cheaper in NoVA but Seattle doesn’t have income tax so you have more to spend each month. Taxes are a wash IMO after you consider everything beyond just sales tax. For what it’s worth, I’ve been able to double my income since going to Seattle and there always seems to be potential job opportunities available (more so than when I was in DC).
I lived in Arlington and Seattle. Assuming single, renting, and living similar standards of living, Seattle is slightly cheaper due to no income tax than the Clarendon/Rosslyn/Ballston corridor of Arlington.
Fairfax is well below Arlington in terms of rent but you will for sure need a car. You can get away without a car in Seattle and Arlington but everyone I know who ended up settling there got a car.
Thanks, I'm the opposite. Have mortgage on townhome, married with kids under 5
