It is January 1, 2023 and you are closing you December time. You realize that you missed your annual bonus target of 2,000hrs by 1hr of billable time. Your firm has made it clear that you won’t get any bonus if you don’t hit the minimum. What, if anything, are you going to do?

Double check emails, files, etc and see if I missed anything that I could bill for. Literally anything.

like

I'd find an hour of unbilled time. I tend to (inadvertently) underbill in Dec because of how busy I am anyway.

like

Anyone who misses by 1 hour or only finds out they did after year end probably didn’t care enough for the bonus? If I’m on track or that close then I’m calculating my time several times weeks in advance of year end to confirm that I’m still on track. If it is the week before year end and I need that extra hour it would be pretty easy to find unless everything I’m on went pencils down.

like

Exactly. I always have something I can do unless it’s like March 2020 everything is pencils down.

Can I double check a junior’s closing set? Help download the data room for a closed deal? Update a checklist? Shit, I don’t care if I’m not supposed to do some of this as a senior due to cost if I’m literally ONE hour away - partner can write down that time.

You should never miss by 1 hour or even 10. You better start taking a few extra minutes to do everything now. Think harder and longer.

like

It’s not unethical to double check you didn’t miss anything and add time you may have omitted. .1s add up.

Obviously it is unethical for you to lie and make up random time so don’t do that.

Just add an hour my god

like

Whoever doesn’t hit that is an idiot

I'd preemptively borrow an hour from January 1 or January 2 if it meant getting a six-figure bonus vs. not getting a six-figure bonus...

Best advice I can give: hit 2,000 in November. Worst advice I can give: hit 2,000 in November.

You’re welcome.

::moral compass spinning::

You should close 2000 hours before 2023. Do it on December 31 if you have to. There’s gotta be some billable or pro bono work you can put in the last 5-10 hours. You can’t miss by single-digit hours — you have to know where you’re at and get there

like

Find an hour but the real answer is look at this on December 28th and if you’re short, ask a mentor or a cool senior/counsel type to give you something administrative to do for an hour

like

Lol at realizing that late about time missing. I think I had my weekly hours planned and began checking continually from October on

like

You time needed to be in by the end of the month. Better luck next year?

like

This doesn’t happen, people know exactly how many hours remaining they need to hit bonus. But borrow an hour from the next day’s time.

Anyone else in the “here for a good time not a long time” club? This job gets a lot more tolerable when you don’t actually need it (no intention to make partner, no loans, etc.). I generally do good work, but I’m happy being a B associate, I don’t dwell on small mistakes or what partners think of me, I take my vacations and never overwork myself to “look good”. All this to say, you don’t need to be an A+ associate to stay employed. Try being a B associate, it’s a lot more fun.
