Friday night. No plans. Woohoo
It’s great to see that you are helping with important internal initiatives. I’m going to share with you my personal perspective based on having gone through two layoffs in my career.
First, I know we all worry about the future in times like these and are afraid of losing our jobs. However, you can also drive yourself to the ground by worrying too much as honestly, there is only so much you will be able to influence. Therefore, ask yourself, ok, if I lose my job tomorrow, what do I need to do to be able to survive the experience. What can I be doing now that will help me better prepare? How can I divert my energy into something positive than something that will burden me with worry?
Second, nothing in life is permanent. At some point in your life, you would have very likely left your current employer for a different opportunity elsewhere. Therefore, if the current chapter closes, well it was going to close anyway. You can always choose how your next chapter should begin.
Third, when you look back at this moment, what do you want your future self to say about your current self? That in the moment of adversity, did you rise up and take your life by the helm? This moment could well be the greatest moment of your career as uncertainty can either cloud our view or it can help us further refine our vision.
Fourth, no matter what happens, you will get through it just fine. Think about all the times in your past where you were knocked down or suffered a loss. You lived through those moments. You will live through this one too.
I wish you the best. Your journey is in your hands.
It’s impossible to say. If you keep making yourself valuable to the firm (billable or not) that is the best you can do right now.
If you have to ask...it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye out for alternative opportunities
Is it bad that I’ve thought about what essential work I could do, god forbid I’m laid off?
Yeah doesn’t matter, what would happen is it would be based off your prior employer then
