Have you already tried negotiating a raise or promotion? If you have been working hard and haven't seen any recognition or promotions in your time there, I would try to negotiate something and if they don't respond well, I would start looking elsewhere
One of things I had to do at this point in life was to self promote and ask for an HR review of my original job Description and what you are doing now (hopefully there is a similar job title that you or they could compare your work to)
This would be similar to presenting a proposal for approval.
If there is no money available but you can get the title, that could be a win if you are willing to look outside the company for work.
Things like this is why the “quiet quitting” / working your job title only is so popular.
But you took the initiate to do the work, now you get to learn to take initiative to get the money/title.
Hi!
I would list all those extra responsibilities that I´ve taken, results that I´ve created, skills & knowledge I´ve learnt... and based on that think about what “moving up” exactly looks like to me.
Then, I would schedule a 1:1 with my manager to discuss my points, share my ideas for the next steps, get their feedback and agree upon what the next steps might be.
I would also think about how would I feel and what would I do in case there´s no potential for promotion & salary raise anytime soon.
Wish you all the best!
If you’d like to share more, feel free to message me/connect on LI. Happy to chat further.
No not a mistake….perhaps a lesson to be learned about the differing values of what is expected to get you to the next level (some leaders think “grunt” work is required and part of the deal). Your worth is never tied to an org or in your output at work.
Can you leverage skills gained for another role? Do you leverage these responsibilities gained as part of your performance and / promo discussions?
Consider for your discussion - what would forcing recognition look like (accolades or compensation)? You should be in a position to articulate which means more to you while being equally prepared to walk away if nothing changes or if it’s a deal breaker.
Unfortunately, unless you ask for a raise and promotion, many employers would rather pay you less and have you do more. Do your research of how to ask for a raise or a promotion and be prepared to back it up with actual data. Sometimes you gain more respect by doing that. Sometimes the money is not there, but you are in control of whether to stay or go.
Even without the context of expanding responsibilities, a lot of times they come with new exposures, skills and experience which will eventually serve you well. In case there is limited internal mobility opportunities in your current organization, still these can benefit your career when you switch to another company in future. For people moving upward, you will definitely need wide exposure on various knowledge domains to appreciate their interdependency to be successful.
This isn’t quite the market to be trying to force managements hand but getting other offers is the best way. But in 95% people over estimate their worth so its a risk
