Which agencies are going through layoffs
I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

1. They've to pay for your 'home' flight
2. You've 60 days to find a new job without any repercussions on your immigration status
3. Keep your head high; plenty of us have gone through the immigration nonsense to finally be resilient to the challenges
@OP - Similar thing happened to me at Deloitte last year. No notice and they just terminated me when I came back from vacation. Totally unexpected and I had not even finished year end review etc. Think business was just dipping in our group.
Anyways I was on a H1B, was looking earlier but ramped by networking very aggressively. Got 3 job offers. The companies usually apply consular visa for which you might get RFE as well. You will have to go out and comeback in (I did it in Mexico).
There is also no said rule about the 60 days. It is a myth cooked up on websites and forums. You can technically and legally stay till date of expiration of your visa, but lawyers usually don't recommend it. This is a very grey area. EY has to give you access to an attorney and a flight ticket back home. Speak to lawyer and strategize best steps. Have all your questions consolidated!
Don't worry too much and trust things will workout. Sometimes these guys are assholes in they way they deal with the employment of people on visas , but we just got to deal with it I guess.
Good luck and please ping if you have any questions!
I've worked with phenomenal people in consulting. And the responses here validate that. Thanks for the help and support everyone. Relationships matter more than companies. Although I may not be huge proponent of EY now, the people will always be near and dear to me. CHEERS!
Mc1 the assumption you are making is that everyone has the opportunity and background as you do to freely move continents and companies. As much as no one would admit, the really high number of indians stuck in consulting jobs is because it usnt easy to find other jobs that sponsor h1bs or GC for that matter. If you move jobs, its another 2-3 year cycle simply to refile your GC application. All immigrants are lawful residents who pay hefty taxes to this country. Lets NOT forget that.
You got 60 days to find another job, no? Are they paying your flight back?
Leaving immediately sounds cruel though so for that I'm sorry
SC1 109% as of today
OP. Clearly the feedback is warranted. Several people said you have 60 days yet you keep whining wanting 30 days.
OP 109%?? Im no where close to that number. What's going on
I'm with EY1 on this one. Sorry about your luck, OP. I believe that you should and hope that you will be treated with dignity, but you aren't owed anything.
@Booz Allen 1 - Sorry to burst your bubble but consulting companies have so much of opportunities and just not enough local talent (so called American citizens/descendants of Immigrants themselves). It is not your Harvard MBA graduate who is unemployed, it is your blue collar and high school diploma holders suffering the most. Now if consulting companies want to hire a bunch of high school graduates instead of immigrants please do go ahead and try to MAGA.
Otherwise don't bother much cause there are a ton of jobs and not enough people to take those. If you doubt it just go to one of the career pages for the big 4 or MBB or Fortune 500 company. Yes, what I do does not solve cancer but it helps many companies work towards a greater goal (no cool aid here) and maybe makes a bunch of guys with tumi bags richer. So what, that's how the world runs and shall continue to!
B1: Let me also tell you, I had no desire of coming to US if not for the multitude of US universities that set up shop in my city promising greater opportunities and selling dreams. Before I realized it was all phony i am too deep in the system and too far in life to accommodate change. I feel like bonded slave here tied to kpmg and I can't move that quickly with my family or my house, and my employer can terminate whenever they want. It's an unsettling feeling I have to live with for a greater part of my life. If I realized this were to happen, I wouldn't have stepped into this country.Real winners in this whole scheme are US corporations. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
MC1: lol..it was simple question and I am lost reading your reply. I still don't get what your point is,
1.if you're angry that I decided to have a better life. I feel sorry for you.
2.if you're angry that your job is being replaced by an immigrant. May be you need to take it up with you're employer or re-evaluate your skills because H1Bs are employer sponsored and not employee sponsored.
3.if you think not hiring an immigrant is going to get you more job security. You're ignorant and don't understand who the true winners in the system are.
4. If you think you're underpaid because of an immigrant, I agree and which is why we need a reform.
5.if you can't stand another person outside your own kind. I respect that, and neither do I want to interact with you.
if you truly want to address the issue, hating me is not the solution.
Yes. You've got 60 days. Don't book your tickets yet.
Did you come on a L1. ?
http://www.immi-usa.com/60-days-h1b-grace-period-2017-final-rule/ you have a sixty day grace period op. Good luck.
OP.. sorry that you got terminated.. but instead of panicking to leave tomorrow -- first find the facts, yea your out of status for today but that does not employ you are illegal, your legality depends on I94.. as long as it is valid you are legal in this country. Secondly, you have 60 days by which you have to start your visa transfer, previously it was 30. Now beyond 60 days- you will still be able to do a visa transfer but it has to be consular processing - which means that once your new employer files your visa and it is approved - you have to go out of the country may be to Canada and come back with an updated I94 .. this happens very often and layoff in H1 is not unusual .. talk to your lawyer before you start selling ur house, car and start running back to the border!!!.. good luck
What car you selling
EY 9 not sure... My counselor was busy so didn't get a chance to speak. I guess the decision was already made last month. But I feel the counseling process is not consistent and subjective anyway. If your counselor does not fight for you, you are screwed.
People just love blaming immigrants for their misery and problems. If someone from a country where your language for a start is not their native language is able to take your jobs, then maybe you need to look internally rather than blame externally. We are here to stay, deal with it!
Update...Lawyer said I will have status 60 days from date of termination and that I should not have a problem moving to F1 and working full time on CPT. Planning to move to industry.
