Just lateraled and looks like I’ll be taking on a sizeable privacy practice from an associate who left recently. Any benefit to CIPP and CIPM training/certification as a lawyer? In DC if that matters.

I’m not sure because I’m not in privacy, but a number of associates and partners at my firm have put it on their LinkedIn pages in front of their names like it’s a KBE or something. So it must be important.

Looks great on your resume but doesn't do much in terms of actually improving your privacy knowledge. CIPM is actually an exception though - can be very helpful if you don't already know how to set up and manage a privacy program

Clients find the certification critical because it helps the attorney manage large-scale compliance projects from both the legal and business side of things. Most large companies look for the certifications when outside or inside counsel oversee privacy compliance programs. The certifications are inexpensive and your firm should cover the tests and certification costs. It also should help you individually as the partners can market you to clients as a privacy expert.

Does anyone have any tips on certain job positions or companies where an LLM would prove to be useful with my background?

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. What is a reasonable pay increase + bonus? This will be my first pay increase. I make 70k and I will be starting my second year at big law (immigration). I had 2 years of prior experience before joining the firm. My manager rated me highest in all areas and mentioned she recommended me for promotion but it may not happen until next cycle since there are limited number of promotions to give. I will get a pay increase regardless so I want to negotiate in case I don’t get a “good” increase.
