What Strategist 1 said. 90% of the time you’re gonna have to move agencies to not be always labeled as “the data person.” Possible, but it is a super niche job search to find something that’s a data/brand hybrid that you can eventually pivot over into full brand. Typically you’ll see it at smaller shops where smaller scopes = a need for more hybrid strategists.
If you want to move internally, I’ve seen it happen - it’s gonna be all about building rapport not just with the strategy team, but also with the broader team (especially account and creatives). Obviously make it known that you want to move to brand strategy (easier for juniors to do than a midlevel/higher) and then start getting yourself in situations where you’re collaborating with the broader team more.
Find ways to turn your quant insights into thought starters that you can work with your brand strategist on to get yourself in the room more with creatives, or work super closely with account on competitive/business reporting. That way if/when something pops up, you’re the first person in mind vs an external hire.
That being said - would caution that doing this internally would likely be a lateral move, so you might be spending longer as a junior than you’d want. But the year as a junior brand strat you spend learning 5Cs research, the business, how to understand creatives, brief writing, targeting/positioning, being more front and center with clients, etc. is super valuable.
Can reach out to the lead strategist on your team and ask for their input?
I did this transition. Found a role that was looking for strategists with a data background. It's a little difficult to find because you basically have to interview a bunch to actually see if the job entails strategy or reporting. But an internal transfer may be easier. Have a casual 1:1 with the strategy folks
Thank you both!
It's definitely a path here. Stay close on the parts of the job where analytics crosses with strategy, like the upfront strategy development, the business case for work, and the effectiveness case studies, and keep asking your head of strategy about roles. The creative industry is less numerate than it used to be; people will be grateful for someone who can bring insight and direction grounded in evidence.
I would get advice from the head of strategy if that’s your goal but first mention to your boss that it’s a long term goal so it doesn’t bite you later when they talk about you. If the head of strategy doesn’t like you or see you as a potential strategist - better to do it outside current organization
Leave and go somewhere else. There are very few junior strategist jobs so a lot of Strategist (myself included) didn’t have a traditional jr strat job. So having a data strat background is gonna give you a leg up against people transferring from account, media planning, etc.
Play up the fact that you worked closely with strategy & how your research informed the strategy, etc
This my strategic plan. I’m going to look outside and play up my transferable skills i.e. worked close with strategist
