Left BCG a few years back for a VP role at F500. Not sure I want to relocate for an SVP promotion (family and dual career reasons) and considering going back into consulting.

Wondering what title/level I should aim for at different firms? Is Partner or MD a possibility?

What level did you leave it? The case for higher boomerang would be stronger with time and success demonstrated in SVP role.

What you are describing is the worst aspect of corporate climbing to me. In consulting, we all traveled, but our families could stay put. Corporate advancement often involves disrupting the whole clan.

Not to be too much of a homer but this is the perfect type of fit to come into a firm like Alix at the Director level. In fact many from MBBs / tier 2 do it because of our high compensation and strong track record of integrating senior hires which many B4s, T2s and MBBs struggle with.

like

BDA - I said usually do not. Not that they aren’t.

Per the SEC: “A company must disclose information concerning the amount and type of compensation paid to its chief executive officer, chief financial officer and the three other most highly compensated executive officers”. So by default I would think most SVPs are not the 3 most highly compensated people.

But whatever.

What level were you when you left BCG and how long ago was that?

like

Sorry, don’t think you are anywhere close to getting partnership at MBB until you demonstrate success as SVP.
At BCG, they’ll offer you principal if they like you.

Partner1 , are you by chance from EY?

McK1 is right. I left McK as an EM for a VP of ops role. Testing the waters to get back into consulting (as a Principal/AP) for a variety of reasons. I would not even attempt to get to Partner right away because of the network I would need to build. Also, 3 years outside consulting does not quite buy you the ability to leapfrog from a PL (EM) to Partner IMO.

like

Agree. Best of all worlds scenario would to come in with AP/Principal title, AP2/P2 comp, agree to visiting election discussion in 12 months of stars align, expectation/allowance of 2–2.5 years runway.

Do you really need to move with Covid and all? Remote work is the new thing. Can you get a place at new city just for you and commute? Hopefully not too much of a stretch. See a lot of senior leaders do stuff like this and companies accommodate if they really like you. For example, I know one that has family on east coast but C-suite role is on west coast and commutes.

like

SVP at F500 is a very, very wide range. Not sure 3 years of 9-5+ means you should skip a few levels, you would basically have to find an MDP to give you revenue, good luck.

like

Compensation isn’t a “qualification.” While I agree 3 years of VP industry experience will give OP valuable experience and credibility with clients, it doesn’t justify skipping a couple years ahead of peers who stayed at the firm and have been building consulting skills, relationships, and a business platform the whole time.

I think coming back as a Principal would be reasonable, possibly non-equity Partner level if they had maintained strong relationships and had a lot of pull from influential MDPs at BCG, plus were likely to be able to drive a lot of revenue at their old F500 or similar firms.

Even if OP came back as an MDP they would likely really struggle because that role is very different from anything they had done before

like

Where are you located? Where are they looking to relo you?

PL to VP sounds awesome. What size company if you don’t mind me asking? Thinking of exiting :)

Some trends in my data points line up with that.
- 2/3 relevant pre-MBA industry experience
- 2/3 deep familiarity with Exec Team including CEO pull/reporting line
- All 3 were 18+ tenured PL2s

Partner (non equity) at BCG may be possible

Should I leave my first permanent job as a team leader of 4 DPs in a FMCG business (only been there for 4 months) to join a huge Tech business for a 12months contract?

They offer me 60% more money than my permanent role. Circa 2000 dollars every month in my pocket

However, I am worried if I accept the tech role and I do not become permanent I will be looking again for a job in 12-24 months and my CV won't be showing a managerial position. Won't be showing any progress.
