Looking for the pros and cons of moving to San Diego to raise a family. Weather seems incredible, top public schools seem great based off of what I've read and looks like there's lots of diversity as well. Thank you in advance!

My sister used to live there. Biggest con is definitely money. From housing costs to energy costs it takes a bigger bite unless your from NYC or San Fran.

like

Tough part will be the affordable housing component, best of luck to you though..your thoughts definitely make sense

like

I grew up in Marin, lived in SF for 5 years and then Manhattan for 15. The costs here won't scare you if you are from the Bay Area and the public schools are mostly good. And when you are at the beach in Feb... Its pretty awesome.

like

I am in SD…well the next town east of it. Housing is really expensive (which is why we are in the burbs). Also there is a large homeless/transient population. Tents everywhere and garbage. The city/county doesn’t seem to really have any effective solutions with regards to it. Also they do have a trolley system, but it only takes you to a few places. So if you’re coming from an urban setting, you will be stuck in traffic…not as bad as LA though. Those things aside, I do enjoy living here although I miss the city life.

like

East County-Santee, La Mesa, El Cajon area

Moved to North County SD from Manhattan 5 years ago. Miss NYC but with 2 young kids, the greater SD area is hard to beat. Tons to do, great weather, etc as others have said. There is traffic, but nothing like LA or NYC and SAN airport has good flight options to most major cities and is super easy to use. Housing costs might be high or manageable depending on where you are coming from...

My biggest concern... Its very laid back and it's easy to cruise here...a lot of people with not a lot of drive. NYC is probably too far the other way. In NY, people ask you what you do within 3 min of meeting you... Here... I have friends I've known for years and we have no idea what the other does for a living. I definitely am aware of not letting my kids cruise too much as they grow up. Other than that... Its a really nice place to raise a family...

like

It's just not as competitive here... And maybe NYC was too competitive but it resonated with me. It's easy to coast here... College is optional... a career... A lot of people don't care and will just take whatever job and stick with it. And that's totally fine... To each his own. I just want to make sure my kids are pushed / learn to push themselves

If you have a job that pays well, I say go for it.

Hardest part about SD currently is finding an occupation that pays you well and is something you’re interested in. This is due to the fact that we’re mainly a military town but is quickly changing as our BioTech scene has flourished along with the recent addition of multiple FAANGMULA (not sure what it’s called now) campuses in the area.

Been here ~10 years, considering leaving as of recently due to other employment opportunities but all of my future plans have returning to SD on them.

Went from B4 to a fully remote boutique firm just to stay in SD! Excited to see what opportunities/firms come to SD in the next couple years

like

For a similar vibe but more things to do I would pick Orange County over San Diego. San Diego is first and foremost a military town. But if you are looking for that kind of super laid back beach vibe then it would be a good choice!

How’s living near downtown San Diego? (Single, mid-20s, F)

Thanks CC1, appreciate the insight! I’m considering moving there for a bit.

Are you already married? There’s like no singles scene in SD.

Hello! I’m gearing up for my year end comp conversation and I’d like to be a better idea of what people are making to ask for a raise. I work for a large asset manager and sell alternative investments (PE, RE, Credit, Infra etc) to RIAs, family offices, and multi family offices. I’m currently an associate, but am hoping to get VP this cycle. Any insight on what your comp looks like and how it’s structured would be super helpful!

I still believe i work at a good place but i feel like we’re losing focus. I feel my boss is leaving soon. It’s a mess.

Hi! Can someone recommend a source for learning how do simple, fun music lessons on Zoom? I teach first grade and use music for my transitions. I would also like to play songs for them with my guitar, but am concerned it won’t sound good on zoom (the guitar, not my voice, which is bad, we established that long ago)

Did anyone else’s back-to-school plan not include music at all? I’ve been told I’m still supposed to teach music this year, but they haven’t announced any plans for it yet. You’d think the classes that contain the most students per day would be a higher concern 🙃

I also realize that 65k is low for cybersecurity. What should I target for my next to role?
