Get your files together. Save stuff to google drive, clean personal stuff off your machine.
Don’t do what I did and freak out. Enjoy your time off, negotiate severance, and have faith that if you work hard at networking and finding your next thing you’ll be better off than before. I was laid off all summer and spent so much time depressed, miserable and worrying.
Fortunately, in this business no one will look down on you for being let go under these circumstances. Unfortunately, that's the nature of this business. Best of luck.
When I was starting out, someone told me that over your career it’s not a matter of ‘if’ you’ll get laid if, it’s ‘when'. Silver lining. It’s an opportunity to recalibrate and move forward. Good luck.
If you worked to the best of your ability,
you did everything in your control.
That’s all any of us can ever do.
After 25 years in the business and never being laid off, it happened. I was in shock. Rough couple of weeks. Thankfully I got a call to contract which led to a full time gig. Take the time to get some things in order if need be or just try and enjoy the time off
Get your unemployment taken care of a s a p.
Just know that a lay-off has nothing to do with your worth. It’s uncomfortable and unfortunate, but it’s a part of our industry and doesn’t reflect on you in any way. Don’t let it rattle your confidence in your abilities and skills.
Oh!! Listen to ML, OP!! I didn’t do this either and it was a huge mistake!! I lost so many work samples and assets that would have been great for my portfolio!
Sorry to hear that @OP If you’re in a holding company, prepared to be screwed over with severance—negotiations are nonexistent. Written from experience LOL.
Immediately back up all of your work and start to network internally—get those LinkedIn recommendations, ask for leads, and start putting feelers out there.
Take time to breathe and reflect on the situation if it develops. Though it absolutely isn’t your fault, consider any gaps or areas of improvement that persuaded management to act the way they did.
Then, use your downtime while searching for work to focus on those areas. You’ll be better positioned in your next move. But avoid beating yourself up or spiraling into negativity. Sadly, agencies are becoming more client and project based and aren’t willing to keep folks on the bench until the next big engagement
100% agree with MullenLowe. Make sure you have your stuff! Some places will retrieve at least personal files for you but that could feel violating.
After that there’s not a ton you can do except maybe put out some feelers in case you’re right - doesn’t hurt to start looking. Sorry this is happening.
Hold your head high and take it gracefully. Then try and negotiate more severance or health care coverage. Worked for me! And got me my next job when the person who laid me off offered me a role at their new agency a month later. Also, everyone is right: clean up your machine, grab work samples...now. And do your expenses so you don’t have to deal with that crap in the aftermath. Most importantly take a deep breath and don’t take it personally. It sucks. And I am so sorry you are going through this.
I got laid off for the first time recently and was DEVASTATED! It seriously felt like the worst thing that has ever happened to me. Everyone said to enjoy the down time but also carve out specific time each day to work on networking, applying for jobs, etc. and enjoy having more free time which I absolutely did not so because I was freaking out and feeling like such a failure. But in retrospect now that I’m at an even better gig I wish I had taken that advice.
Good luck and like everyone told me (and what did happen) you’ll land on your feet somewhere even better and look back at all of this as a blip on the radar.
Been laid off three times. It’s a rite of passage in advertising. Apply for unemployment immediately. Take a week off. And i mean OFF. Then make job hunting your full time job. You’ll land somewhere better in no time
Agree with the zen & prep suggested above. (re)light-up your network.
Get unemployment ASAP. Enjoy your time off, you will be just fine. No one looks down at you for this in the job research. Things happen for a reason. Remember: one door closes, many others will open! Keep positive and get out there and hustle.
Agree with VP1. It’s so hard not to take it personally. Even though downsizing is due to cost, it still felt like crap that they felt like they could function without me with no notice, especially after years of positive feedback.
I also got so sick of people telling me to enjoy “funemployment,” even though they meant well. Sometimes the downtime felt great and other times it felt awful.
But it’s so true that it’s just a blip in your career and that you’re likely to come out with something better, especially since it’s less of a stigma in our industry.
Thanks so much for your support you guys. I was indeed laid off today. A LOT of us were - surprised by the amount of good talent lost. This thread really helped me prepare, even though it was still devastating.
Good luck. Turn to your network. Statistically, the best way for you to find another gig.
Thank you so much everybody, you've been really helpful!!!
