My immigrant parents, who spent my whole adult life asking me when I would "get a real job" (though I had a degree and job) and expressing their disappointment in me, texted me today to wish me a happy Women's Day and say they are proud I am their daughter.

Would be totally nice and sweet except for the fact that we were no-contact for 6 years, they only reached out to me when they found out I was graduating law school, and they are literally only "proud" now that I'm an attorney.

Finally a job we can brag to our friends about after years of living in embarrassment. What took you so long?!!

Sounds like my aunt, she raised me here in America but as a child. However, due to her toxicity she is on a network block. I want my peace and no longer seek her acceptance for anything.

Careful, on my experience these messages tend to be followed closely by demands for money and being called ungrateful when you refuse.

Are you me? So triggering...

I’m sorry your immigrant parents are like that. I have the opposite problem: I was the kid my immigrant parents bragged about to extended relatives back in their country. I could do no wrong. It was so much pressure to live up to that I cracked and started acting out as soon as I went off to college.

like

Ugh. That is really frustrating. I get that parents are human but it would be great if they were, you know, better humans sometimes.

I honestly hesitated greatly before letting them back into my life. I eventually caved due to the fact that they are getting older and (with lots of therapy) I now understand that the harsh stuff they said was rooted in their own intergenerational trauma.

Didn't make me feel less cringe today when I got the text though.😖

Do they have “real jobs”? Or are they relying on you for retirement?

I am the first to go to college in my family, so short answer is no.

I think they were relying on me for retirement, but they treated me pretty poorly for many years (hence the NC), then I got married and moved out of state, so that part is complicated. They haven't explicitly asked for $$$ yet but I've only been an attorney since 2021 so who knows.

You didn't have their number blocked? 🤣. Way better than me.

I was literally just thinking this.

Anyone ever act on their feelings?

So… 3.5 year relationship came crashing in Jan due to covid depression, work burn out, lockdown etc. We have stayed in contact and recently he has come around to apologizing and considering getting back together. However he also revealed he started seeing someone casually 4 weeks ago and technically is cheating on her by meeting me for coffee and to discuss this. I’m upset that he’s dating others but shouldn’t be right? I mean, I did the same. Still hurts though. And I told him to sort that out

Anyone feel like your job sees you as "one of the good ones?" It hasn't explicitly been said, but I'm one of the only Black attorneys at the firm and I think my white colleagues and partners see me as an example of how Black folks "should be" cause I mind my business. Basically I feel like a token, and I don't know how to shift that idea while staying professional.
