I've hit several stages in the last few years that have leveled up my relationship to my companies, because there were several misalignment and zero future in sight.
Firstly, I came up with goals that were not associate with the company I worked for, but were achievable through my work. As you've said, the market is junk and simply finding something else is not as easy as handing out 2 or 3 resumes. So, I picked a skillset that I want to drastically improve and that will benefit me in my current job as well as set me up for my next position. Once I decided to detach my goals with my position, but use my position to achieve my goals, I found an incredible sense of peace and the consternation I experienced in my current job all but disappeared. Because I was once again working towards something I was passionate about.
Secondly, you probably need to have your next step or two somewhat identified. Where exactly do you expect to get to through your current role? What's the next role you want to have? And will your current position/company get you there? If not, identify what or where you need to be to get to your next step. Then figure out what gaps in skills between where you are now and where you need to be to get that next role. Once you identify the skill, see step 1. You can always spin a current crappy situation into a positive if viewed as a stepping stone rather than "this is my life now and forever." Find how your current situation can benefit your next step.
Agreed, I updated my resume and am in “casual search phase”. Market looks terrible so not trying to jump from one average place to another, but do recognize that we’re near the end of the road here and will require a switch in the next 12 months.
Until then just reminding myself that I am human and I’ll do my best; continue to do good work, but don’t give up my outside life or health for this. Easier said than done, but we’re going with it!
OP, sorry this is happening.
It sounds like your gut is speaking loud and killer… Perhaps yelling – it’s time to move on
The easiest time to get a job is when you already have one
Hi Op, Is current manager the primary reason for being burnt out?
Of its more of overwork ?
Both of these things are not uncommon, but possible to fix in a good org, when you are well respected by leadership. Do you have a sponsor/ Mentor ?
Have you had an open dialogue with your manager abt being overworked ? Sometimes changing the setup helps person to open up, may be hes having some other pressures and unable to recognise your status?
Nevertheless, a good strategy to change jobs is, upskill, keep looking, talk to industry colleagues, resign only when you have an offer.
Thanks for the suggestion. It’s not him, more so the work, but the frustration is him as he doesn’t get it how much is on my plate and is supposed to be our advocate / team lead. I don’t have direct sponsor / advocates, but good relationships with most senior people and general consensus is markets tough / this is norm / focus on finding sustainable balance. I’ve come to the conclusion that quitting and sitting at home will be worse in this market; so pull back a reasonable level, network in and out, and see if I can reignite that passion. If so, cool, otherwise; collect check and benefits and then search next year when things are better.
At this point, you need one of two things:
A solid career coach.
A solid labor lawyer.
Neither come cheap.
Both are an end to a means which could be a means to your end short term… and an open door for long term sanity and $$. I think you already know this.
As an SD you have been around and seen your fair share of trench and HQ warfare.
Nothing is worth the mental strain, but the leap must be made with one of the two above (and fast).
Make your choice this week.
You can do this.
