I recently joined TCS but I was moved into very different project which was told during hiring. Also they told me for joining incentive but later after 65 days of joining they didn't give saying your business aproval got rejected. I really want to be with TCS but due to project dissatisfaction, I am looking for different job. I am not sure if I can leave the organisation soo soon(4 months) and it should not effect my carrier.

OP- are you me? I’m in almost the same position but don’t have offers yet (do have toddlers through!). Opt 1 is consulting at a firm looking to create the practice I’m currently in, so I’d lead the group, seems like great ops for growth, to build something and have senior sponsorship. Have had ~4 rounds of interviews and think an offer is imminent. Opt 2 is corporate looking to build in-house this same capability so I would lead the department. Have had ~2 rounds so less certain of offer. Right now not sure WLB will be too different at either one, but hopefully better than now. Currently I’m working a zillion hours because our group is very understaffed and there is huge demand for this work. I’ve been a D for 5 years and am up for Partner in the next 1-2. I’m planning to leave because I’d like to grow something, have real sponsors (feel very unappreciated now), and the big fish in smaller pond appeals to me. Right now my firm is one of few who do this specialty well. I will weigh the offers I get, ask about the 3-5 year horizon for the role and make my decision based on that.
Best of luck to you, let us know what you decide!
Was a partner in a boutique firm, left for an industry role running a P&L, now a B4 partner.
Running a corporate P&L is a very different experience than being successful as an advisor. I really loved my time in industry for that reason.
Some days I’m really pleased I’m back in consulting (when I see friends and colleagues getting turfed by wicked corporate politics). Sometimes I really wish I was back in industry (The hustle for every consulting sale can be a grind).
No right answer
Honestly, nothing you have shared would make me point to one vs the other.
I would go with your gut feeling.
This. "lead a group"? No details about roles / groups / firms, responding is impossible
Two questions there.
Consulting politics is child’s play compared to industry. In consulting we each run our own books of business which gives each of us more power over the firm. If I can’t get along I might get my partner shares dinged, but I’m not getting run out of the firm or have a forced withdrawal on a random whim. The firms are pretty rationale when it comes to producers.
I’ve seen industry leaders have their careers derailed over one bad meeting or idea. We all see C-suite executives who are the “golden child” in one moment and turfed in a matter of months.
Why did I come back to consulting? The roles/engagements that vary far more than in industry. The people are vastly different, at least in my industry.
Totally agree here. I know there are politics everywhere but in my time in industry as an exec I experienced far more politics than I have ever in my 15 years in consulting. It can make or break you if you make one wrong move and aren’t cozy with the right people. And that can change with one person resigning or getting fired. I didn’t feel as in control of my destiny in industry which is one of the reasons I came back.

Steady Industry Role. But stay sharp else you will lose your mojo
Coach
Why is “stay at your current job” not one of the options here? What’s wrong with it?
More established and better support for my career growth
Industry. You can easily pivot back to consulting later.

Nope, tagging the post so I get notifications when people who are more equipped to answer comment. The “up and to the right” graph seemed appropriate because they both seem like great options! 🥳
I assume that is a graph of comp with the consulting option if you make partner and see it through to the end.
How long have you been a Director?
Are you asking whether going to the industry for 3-4 years will help you down the line becoming a partner? It’s not clear what you are asking
@p1 and SVP1 - been a director for 3 years in consulting. Focused on two specific industries and deliver a specific capability (sorry for the vagueness). In my late 30s. I am comfortable with my total comp, but def want to make more. But with a family, I am starting to explore industry roles, yet, still interested in the partnership. Does that help?
Partnership in B4 can be a long journey, and there no guarantees. It is getting more difficult and the financial incentives are no longer in the golden handcuffs territory and vesting periods are beginning to change in the new plans as well.
I’m not telling you this to dissuade you, but if you have not yet began that journey or had any conversations about it to get a sense of whether you will have the support, it is definitely a risk.
On the industry side, I would understand what your path would look like. If you’re interested in partner, I assume you’re ambitious, so make sure you have a path for that in industry.
Family-wise, not sure it matters. An executive position in industry could be just as high stress and intense as partnership; depends on the company’s culture and your role.
My suggestion would be to speak with a mentor in your firm you trust, and get their perspective. I’m not trying to be dodgy, but everything you shared is just very generic (I want to do this but also want to do this and I have a kid) and this is a very personal decision. Hope this helps a little.
No personal experience but heard industry pays well. director equivalent in industry can make upwards of 350k
Practice Lead1, VPs barely making 250 looks like super low situation. Is this specific to Industry?
Also, how did you move back to consulting as a partner. Do you work in a niche area? I am interested in moving back fo industry but it seems only option is MD or ED. Is that possible?
@p2- what brought u back to consulting? I assume politics in industry is not that different from consulting at the partner level
Industry politics is three dimensional chess vs consulting checkers. Different ballgame
If you can get into the right roles in tech sector, the comps are significantly more...
