People with hiring power: For a junior creative starting out, would it do them more harm than good to stay at their first/second agency for an extended period (1yr +)?

I worry that recruiters will see me as stale or unmotivated if I stay at my agency more than my current handful of months, but actually, I just don’t think I’ve got the most out of them yet. I’m yet to work on any portfolio-worthy creative, but I get the feeling the agency want to challenge me more as time goes on.

I have never in my life heard someone reference a year as a long time to stay somewhere. Good lord.

likefunny

As a junior creative you want to stay for a year or more. It’ll take that or longer to get work in your portfolio

like

Jumping around is the red flag. And learning and building a book is critical. So sounds like you should stay a while.

like

I’d say that too many moves (and/or several sub 1 year tenures) is concerning but if you have more to learn and grow from there, stay there,

like

No it would be more harmful to jump around. You need a couple years to learn about working at an agency as well as improve as a copywriter. You’ll get to know you’re team better and you’ll be better off in the long run.

like

Staying is fine if you’re book is benefitting. The book is what matters.

like

I takes six months minimum to get into the swing of things. Then, it takes another six months to really hit your stride within the agency structure.

In my experience, year two is where the opportunities lay. You know the agency’s process. You know who you need on your side to get an idea made and how to get them on your side, too.

So, I think you’re right to stick around. Get that portfolio piece first, then bounce.

like

A year is not long. Stay and get material for your book. Additionally, see if you get a title change and more money. Once it seems you hit a wall, leave. I stayed at a place for 2-ish years until things got stale and then I left for another agency. It’s when you’re hitting four or five years with no growth that you might seem stale. Don’t sweat a year or two.

like

Use some common sense

1 year is not "an extended period of time"

Why would that make you look stale or unmotivated? Who's telling you this nonsense? What's happened to advertising? 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️💀

Thanks for the comments, everyone! Much appreciated.

Genuinely thought that placement after placement was *the* way to get a beefy contract. Where I got it from idk, but it’s nice to be completely wrong 😂

Ahaha thanks, a little snark isn’t the end of the world

I think you should stick around for atleast two years. Only switch if you get a really good offer.

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.

Hi, where or what types of companies should sophomores & juniors apply for next summer (2022) to recruit for IB the following summer (2023)? This summer BBs wrapped up SA IB recruitment, EBs even earlier, and a fair amount of my friends missed out big time.

Also, if a sophomore or junior doesn’t get a finance-related summer internship (I.e tech) and aims for an IB SA or FT position, is it harder to break in?

Appreciate any advice and insight, thank you.

Is this something I should even consider? I miss my patients and some of my coworkers and the pay is better, but I don't feel like I would really be welcome to come back.

I’m mid 30s F. Recently started seeing this guy, where he is “good enough”. Good conversations, decent time together, he has a good heart, but nothing about him shines. - not fit (I work out everyday and play sports), meh social skills (he doesn’t have best friends, just few he hangs out with), bit less energy than me.
There is a feeling in me that says “he’s going to be a comfortable life partner” and “he is just good enough, but if I break up I won’t find someone for a long time”
Do I stay?

Not looking for the narrative arc of How I Built This or Masters of Scale. Instead, looking to uncover specific problems faced by companies that tried something new for the first time. What did they not see coming, how did they adapt and measure, etc.

Is there any realistic way where tipping in the US goes away and we start to be like other countries (e.g. Europe/Asia)? Raise the price of the food, pay servers a fair wage, no tips? Just a dream 😅

I'm guessing no because businesses will fight hard against this (customers subsidize wages) and certain servers benefit from tipping as well.

Only other thing I can think of is if everyone collectively decides not to ever tip again and it forces business to change. Won't happen though.
