Considering the ChFC is the original CFP, has all of the same classes expect the one personal planning class and 2 additional business classes. I totally disagree with you WF1
Commit to the CFP - literally takes 7mo start to finish.
I have the AWMA and I see CMFC very commonly. Being competent is the most important. Trust, competence, and confidence is all that really matters. As long as you can gather assets and keep the clients happy you're good.
Just do the cfp. It's the only one other than cpa that a client will ever recognize. It's not that hard.
CFA
CFA is a whole different ballgame. If you’re not looking to commit to the CFP, why are people suggesting the CFA... 2/3 year study vs 7mo?
FA5 it’s not the work part that’s the problem. I’ve got friends and employee a cfa. It’s the family aspect. Everyone I have ever met has always said do it before getting married and having kids. That’s the killer.
The CFA is a waste of time if you are going to be an fa imo. Not stuff you will ever use on a day to day basis. Even if you build your own stock/bond portfolios with individual names the time to do the analysis will leave no time for marketing etc. better use of time would be cfp and cpwa. That said the cfa is by far the most respected by people who know anything because it is the most challenging.
ChFC, but if you are going to put in that much work, why wouldn't you do the CFP, short of not already having a bachelor's degree?
Do the CFA. Then you’ll know commitment :)
CFP makes you do a capstone course, forces you to learn to put together a comprehensive plan. In order to pass the test you will need t master the info in order to answer the questions
Chfc.. I don’t really consider it a real designation. American college is a money grab
The CFA is completely real but be ready to devote every waking minute of your life for 3 yrs
I recommend the CFP designation and then the APMA designation. Those are the best designations in my opinion. Also the CIMA designation is strong. However, is having a designation really important to clients versus honesty and trust?
^ they aren't mutually exclusive. You can hold the cfp designation and display honesty and trustworthiness. Obviously having the designation won't significantly change your business but in an increasingly competitive and informed industry it certainly doesn't hurt.
Do the CFP
Three years?! How do people work while doing these things?!
Also I have a few college interns that are doing the cfa while going to school now they can’t use the designation for 3 yrs after school but they have the heavy lifting down
The CFA is 3 levels (tests) followed by a letter of acceptance requesting to be admitted to the CFA charter. CFP is likely more useful for an self-employed/indy FA or RIA.
@ Ameriprise 1, not so much for clients, but more so for prospects.
