Should I be ashamed for not having moved out yet at 25 years old?

likefunnyhelpful

AD3, where were your parents though? I couldn’t move back because it’s all small market agencies

I’m 30 and moving back home. While it’s a separate house — grandparents old house — I’m on the same property with my family. It’s easier, cheaper, and smarter than signing onto a lease or buying a home for me at this point. Plus it will give you greater flexibility should something drastic change in your professional or personal life. If you can work remotely, hedge your bets and...

IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS:

Try to enjoy your time with your parents. They will be gone before you know it. So do some of your favorite shared activities together, don’t sweat when they treat you like their child — you are, and smile. Your time spent there can be a huge blessing — if you let it.

31 with kids and a wife here. Moved in with my parents this month.

We rented out our house but as Corona flared up again the last month or so we decided not to proceed with our next hosting option until things settle. We also didn't want to reneg on our tenants.

So, we're going to enjoy the Grandma/ Grandpa time and I'll try not to get too annoyed by the little things. Also, my wife is a saint.

Moving back in a month. Save money and be around people that you love? That is something to brag, not be ashamed about.

likeuplifting

Everyone who justifies staying home brings up how they’ve saved so much money. Money isn’t everything. What about stunted adulthood? PS you can save money living on your own, too.

likesmarthelpful

Was doing a lot of traveling and rented from family to keep money in the family. In Covid life clearly no travel long but Support the bills in the house voluntarily. That will help with staying focused on getting back.

No shame at all. I moved back in with my family last recession. Best decision I made for myself. It’s a major adjustment but know you are doing what’s best for you and this unique situation.

I’m 30 living at home. The amount I’ve saved outweighs anything anyone could possibly think or say

like

Nope. I moved back home so my parents wouldn’t worry about me with COVID going on.

Many of my friends and colleagues in NYC (mainly those who are young, single, and have few ties to the city) have moved home for an indefinite period of time. Why stay and be miserable if you don’t have to?

like

Bruh my wife and I are living with my parents for a while since they have a lot more room for us then our NY apt. We are 29

likeuplifting

Why the heck not? Plus it’s more company in times when safe company is in short supply. If you and your parents enjoy each other’s company, they have space and maybe it lets you save a lot of money on rent it is a win all around.

like

While I technically didn't MOVE back, I am living with my parents at 34. My parents live in CA near the rest of my family, while I live alone in DC.

Personally, why not do it? I get to spend quality time with my parents and baby niece because I can work from home (anywhere). Now, baby GG and I have a real familial bond that I couldn't create if I only saw her for holidays. That sets us on a course for her lifetime that I am really looking forward to.

And I've spent more time learning from, connecting with, and having fun with my parents now than I have since I first moved out at 18. What a treasure!

Maybe for others, their motivation for moving back home was financial, and I admit that wasn't it for me. I'm not trying to minimize that experience for you. But you can grow your way out of that, while you can never make up for lost time with family. Make the most of it.

Nah. The only thing anyone should be ashamed of right now is not wearing a mask and being a racist.

My finance and I have been staying with her mom for the past 4 months. We aren’t really saving money, because we own our condo and still pay mortgage. But we feel a lot more comfortable being in a single family home, and not having to interact with people in our buildings elevator/lobby/laundry room.

If it feels like the best option for you and your parents are cool with it, I strongly recommend.

likehelpful

Probably. No one is going to want to date someone who doesn’t have their own place if they’re over 25

like

That's a pretty big generalization... got the figures to back it up? 😁

I moved out when I was 16 and recently moved back in at 21. I totally get how you’re feeling and just wanted to tell you that it’s fine and economically smart! My family isn’t good at boundaries or anything, but they do cut fruit for me and make me food at all hours of the days, especially when they see that I’ve been working all day!!! Try to look at the bright $ide!!

likeuplifting

Same boat with the boundaries - another bring side: it taught me how to place and enforce boundaries at a relatively young age.

like

Don’t do it. I don’t care if you sleep in your car or student housing. Don’t go back to your parents. Be adult.

likefunnyuplifting

Stop, seriously, stop! Parents want to be your support system. Don’t listen to Consultant 5. He needs to talk to his therapist about his parent reactions!

like

No

like

Not at all. Now is a good time to save money, be with people you trust and like, and you’re lucky to have that as an option. Living with them for a year or two might feel embarrassing but constant anxiety over money feels an awful lot worse.

likesmart

Nothing to be ashamed of if your parents are welcoming your moving back decision. But please try to make it a little easy for them and pay them some sort of rent or pay for their other expenses; also help with the chores. Your parents will definitely appreciate that and you won’t feel any guilt 🥰

likeuplifting

Absolutely not! My sister is 49 and moving back in.

likefunny

I’m considering doing this as well to save money but making sure I have an exit strategy so I don’t wind up accidentally staying until I’m 45

likesmarthelpful

Don't look at it as a step backwards but as an opportunity to reset your financial situation during an unprecedented time. There's no shame in this.
