Should I be ashamed for not having moved out yet at 25 years old?

likefunnyhelpful

AD3, where were your parents though? I couldn’t move back because it’s all small market agencies

I’m 30 and moving back home. While it’s a separate house — grandparents old house — I’m on the same property with my family. It’s easier, cheaper, and smarter than signing onto a lease or buying a home for me at this point. Plus it will give you greater flexibility should something drastic change in your professional or personal life. If you can work remotely, hedge your bets and...

IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS:

Try to enjoy your time with your parents. They will be gone before you know it. So do some of your favorite shared activities together, don’t sweat when they treat you like their child — you are, and smile. Your time spent there can be a huge blessing — if you let it.

31 with kids and a wife here. Moved in with my parents this month.

We rented out our house but as Corona flared up again the last month or so we decided not to proceed with our next hosting option until things settle. We also didn't want to reneg on our tenants.

So, we're going to enjoy the Grandma/ Grandpa time and I'll try not to get too annoyed by the little things. Also, my wife is a saint.

Given all the articles you read about people not being able to pay rent and about to become homeless soon, consider yourself lucky.

Ashamed? No, this isn’t a normal, stable, prosperous time. So give yourself a break.

Stack that cash! Family is everything. I’m in my 40’s, divorced (expensive)... should I feel ashamed to move back temporarily and tackle my debts and credit? You need to do what’s best for your future self. If you have a good relationship with your folks, then take the helping hand. It all comes around. I would do the same if not more for my child. #selfcare

Ashamed?! You should be praising God!
I wish I had that luxury

Yup! Problem?

Nope. Save that $$$. Also it’s covid times, you should spend more time with your family during this troubling period.

I lived with my mom from 27 to 30 as a boomerang. I had moved out and then got fired from my first job and was devastated after a bad breakup. They were the three longest years of my life because I do not get along well with my mother, but that time gave me what I needed to collect myself and build up the drive to pick up the pieces and try again. I’m 48 now. That was 18 years ago.

like

Agreed. Nothing motivated me more than being unemployed, recently single and living at home with my parents. A very humbling experience that taught me how to find a job with almost no experience. When I finally landed a job in consulting with no work experience, I felt like I could do anything after. I credit those 6 months of misery for a lot of my early career success in my 20s. I’m not the hardest working or best employee, but those months made me understand how to hustle, network and jump firms very well now. I doubt I’ll ever be unemployed for more than 3 months now with the network I’ve built (knock on wood).

I’ll be 29 in a couple months and have never really moved out. I feel like moving out is a big American here. I’m the first generation born in the US (family is from South America) and my mom does not want me to move away until I’m married. For now, I’m using my money to go on amazing vacations and saving for a down payment on a house

I’m not gonna lie I would normally judge a guy who still lives at home at 25 but definitely not during a global pandemic. Things are too uncertain still - if you’re able to do it without going insane go for it

like

Lived with my parent until I was 29. Got married at 28, both my husband and I lived with my mother after we got married for about 6 months while we house hunted. Saved a ton living at home so made the down payment for a house and buying stuff for our new home easier (and yes we still helped my mother with her bills and mortgage while we were there). Best decision ever, never rented a day in my life and I’m good with that.

I'm 39 and considering it. I'd still keep my current place on the east coast and go back to the Midwest. Echoing what some have said, time is limited with your parents, and it becomes such a starker reality as every year passes. Enjoy the time, even when they annoy the hell out of you, because you'll miss it when they're gone.

Many other cultures outside the USA have generational living spaces, where even grandparents are in the house as well. Some of your friends might think it's weird, but why would you care what they think ever, about anything? (*Save for maybe restaurant recommendations)

American families have been groomed by capitalism.. don’t stay together with parents - buy own house, car and spend , don’t ask financial help from parents or family - go get a loan , how can you use the same cars - buy a car for everyone in house.. How come your credit history gets better with loans - I know millionaires who don’t have loan but they will be denied loan while people in unstable jobs get loans ?

is it really independence or complete dependence on the companies to help them increase revenues?

I’m around your age. Moved in with my parents in April and have saved 15 bands. Do it. 💰

I’m 27 and I’ve been living at home since I graduated from college.

It’s a win-win if you have a healthy relationship with your parents and they live close to your work location (which matters a lot less now due to WFH). It’s also not just rent money that makes the difference. There are utilities, groceries, parking, etc. that are all extra when living on your own.

Sure, you can say that my friends living in Clarendon with their college buds had more fun/freedom since graduation but I’m up $150k, I spend quality time with family, I still go out with friends a couple times a week (pre-COVID) and I get home cooking every night if I want it. I help my family out with bills, and the money I saved is being used for down payment on my first house which I’m about to settle on. I help my family out with bills and they appreciate having an extra hand to help out with things. I’m happy and not ashamed at all.

like

If you have the relationship and it is a happy living arrangement then go for it. Don’t stay there just to save money if it is going to damage your relationship with them. Nothing to be ashamed of - I would hope they are happy to help you

Not every family has the money to help. You do what you need to do to survive during this Covid-19 Epidemic. There are no books or advice that you can give to someone on that situation.
