Should I be ashamed for not having moved out yet at 25 years old?

likefunnyhelpful

AD3, where were your parents though? I couldn’t move back because it’s all small market agencies

I’m 30 and moving back home. While it’s a separate house — grandparents old house — I’m on the same property with my family. It’s easier, cheaper, and smarter than signing onto a lease or buying a home for me at this point. Plus it will give you greater flexibility should something drastic change in your professional or personal life. If you can work remotely, hedge your bets and...

IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS:

Try to enjoy your time with your parents. They will be gone before you know it. So do some of your favorite shared activities together, don’t sweat when they treat you like their child — you are, and smile. Your time spent there can be a huge blessing — if you let it.

31 with kids and a wife here. Moved in with my parents this month.

We rented out our house but as Corona flared up again the last month or so we decided not to proceed with our next hosting option until things settle. We also didn't want to reneg on our tenants.

So, we're going to enjoy the Grandma/ Grandpa time and I'll try not to get too annoyed by the little things. Also, my wife is a saint.

Ey7 so you just moved back home for covid or, at 52 y/o are moving out for the first time? Don’t mean to be rude just confused

Nope. It's a good time to save money

33 and couldn’t be happier living with my parents. I’m a boomerang case - lived on my own when I was younger, graduated from bschool a few years ago, moved home ‘temporarily’ and never got around to moving out. MOM, THE MEATLOAF!

This is a shame

No way like half my friends are back with their parents it's chill.

likehelpful

D5, you missed the point.

Honestly it’s a privilege to have the safety net of moving back with your parents. I did the same thing, and I’ve been thinking about it a lot. But I know a lot of people who don’t have that option.

I am an immigrant and would love to be with parents in covid times but family in different country..
yep - not everyone has the option of moving in with family

If it makes you feel any better, I know about 30 new hires in my office (NYC) who didn’t renew this leases and are doing this - I am one of them! I get how you feel but with corona it’s hard to gauge when the true city life will return - many of us are planning to transfer to lower cost cities and the time at home is to figure that out. For the time being, our parents are happy to have us back :)

for what it's worth, I know a lot of people that are doing this. In fact if my parents had space I would probably move back with them and do it so I could save up and buy a home.

How do you all have parents with boundaries??? I have a good relationship with my family but moved out at 22. If I moved back in, I wouldn’t be able to live my own life, let alone WFH in peace.

likesmart

When I lived with my parents & I would WFH, my mom would come into my room in the middle of the day to demand that I clean and do chores for her, meanwhile I would be sitting on a conference call trying to work. She never understood that I was an adult or respected me.

likefunny

Nope. I’m turning 30 in a few month and about to move back after my lease ends in a month. I’m also asian so this kinda thing is more acceptable in our culture. Why spend $2k a month on rent when I can just bank that?

likeuplifting

Moved back in with my parents after graduating as a 22M. Travel cases and now COVID has me easily saving an extra $24k/yr. Using that as a bridge to max my IRA and 401(k) and do a mega Roth backdoor *alone* (not including standard investments) yields well over $4.5M by 63.

I’d say you’re silly not to. It’s the most straightforward form of tax-free generational wealth transfer that exists.

Curious as well

Nope! About to do the same thing. 2k a month plus some free meals will help ease some anxiety

Lol 36 and my lease is up next month. I am planning to move to a new city in Jan, so just moving back home temporarily.

Nope. Think of your parents as roommates. If you are expecting to have roommates anyway why not have those that you know best.

JFC this thread again. There’s nothing wrong with living with your parents, at any age, as long as you’re still contributing / living your life. It’s only weird American hangups about “independence” (which is literally bad for our health bc there’s a loneliness epidemic also in this country) that people feel ashamed about this

Repost - The % of the African American population killed by police in 2019 is roughly 0.0005%. It was 235 people. But around the same year 6,000 african americans were killed by eachother. How do we reconcile these facts? In 2013, 72% of african americans were born to single parent households; one of the strongest indicators of future poverty and criminal disposition. Can we acknowledge and fix instances of police brutality while also not ignoring our cultural problems as well?

Confused if parents want schools to reopen or not? I read so many posts here about how difficult it is to work full time and manage kids’ at-home schooling (I can’t even imagine!) so would assume that means parents want to reopen, but at the same time keep seeing a ton of backlash from parents in states who are pushing to reopen due to safety reasons.
