I don’t have any friends at either company so I was curious if anyone has experience and can shed some light on culture/ work life balance to help me make a decision? Thanks for the help guys!

Hi! It’s says you’re a GRA, so I’m assuming you have a stipend? I understand at most schools, it’s not enough to live. But if you do have a stipend, things I recommend are roommates (multiple if need be), an additional job, and not even maxing out those federal loans. Find ways to make ends meet another way. Maybe take a class less (depending on your requirement for the GRA) so you can afford it with the supplemental job. Rent books, borrow books, buy older or used copies on Amazon. Many grad students qualify for welfare even! One of my profs would talk about how she and her family were on food stamps when she was pursing her PHD. (This was not something I ever tried and I regret it.) Do NOT take out private loans to cover costs.
And if you’re not getting a stipend to attend school in a program that DOES offer (again, I know a lot of masters programs don’t offer stipends), then you should not be attending that school. Or, at the very least, see if you can find a program that does offer stipends for GRA or TAs on campus that has need for them; sometimes these can be found!
Look, all I can say is how much regret I have for maxing out student loans (I didn’t even touch personal). And while we all think we’ll complete our program, a) many people don’t, and b) in most cases, the jobs aren’t paying enough to compensate the loans, much less both federal and personal. I know PhDs working as profs, still paying off loans more than a decade later. Trump is trying to get rid of any kind of forgiveness program, so even working for the gov or education may not mean they get forgiven in a few years. Sure, maybe you’re going to end up a research scientist somewhere instead of a prof, working a lucrative tech or research job somewhere. But there’s no guarantee of that. Work within the means you have, please.
Sincerely,
A stressed out PhD holder who will never pay off their loans and that’s only federal, not predatory personal ones
Sorry for the late response, but thanks so much for all the suggestions you offered. This was such a helpful comment! Thank you!!
I think you're on the right track about exhausting all federal options and comparing offers from private lenders. My one tip would be to only borrow what you absolutely need. It's tempting to take out extra for non-essential expenses, but remember you'll have to pay it all back with interest.
Thank you for your comment!
I ran into this too where I needed to supplement with other loans as I hit the cap for federal loans. My best advice to give is to do what you are doing and compare and think a lot before you jump into something. Keep in mind those interest rates for sure and how much extra you will have to pay in the future.
Thanks!
