Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

Pay seems low but life’s too short to be miserable. Give it a shot.

Give it a shot. Making any money is better than making no money at all.

Yup, soak it all up and learn! Try and get a small signing bonus and get the “do x, get y in z months” as part of the offer letter.

It seems very low for NYC but if you’ve been looking for 11 months then take it for sure.

Yeah my thought too but apparently for small firms that is the norm saw a post on a fb lawyer group and was pretty suprised. Such a huge discrepancy between large, midsize and small firm payscales.

Damn, my assistant makes $150K. That’s rough.

Cont. Seems like a place I could learn at ( practicing for close to 4 years in similar area). Am I fool for taking such a steep cut, given covid?

No. Go for it! If the work culture is great and you enjoy your job, than it was worth it. Plus, as you said, you are not married to the job, you can always find something else should it not be the perfect fit. Good luck!

With no billable hours I'd be happy - what practice area?

Questions to ask your interviewer?

I have what is (hopefully) a final round interview with a controller and CFO of a company today. In a previous final round with a different company, I was asked one question and then was told “Ask Anything.” I was unprepared for this style of interview, and while I had questions ready I was not able to fill up 30 minutes with meaningful questions.

What are some of your guys best questions to ask your interviewers?

I’m 30, no kids, currently have a net worth of about ~$120k ($35k crypto, $35k Roth IRA, $15k in regular stocks, $25k in bank, + a few other possessions). Salary is $120k. My current monthly expenses total about ~$3k. My goal is to get to $10k passive income monthly so I never have to work for financial necessity by the time I’m 40 (or earlier if possible). I’m curious how you would achieve this given that information and how you would invest your money to generate that kind of passive income?
