I don't know where you are located, but I'm in the US and have never had a manager give Christmas gifts. Unless it was something company branded, I might even feel weird about it because I'd start wondering if I was supposed to give one back. Meaning I don't want coworkers spending personal money on me, but if it comes from the company that would be ok.
Good point. It really depends on the culture of your team. Some teams might not like getting into a habit of gifts, whereas others might enjoy it. I ensure my gifts are always from the company and usually company branded so that people don’t feel weird or any kind of obligation to get me anything. But there’s no standard best practice on this it just depends on your team !
I agree with most of the comments here. I think as a manager, you are either taking your team out for a holiday party and or firm branded gear like a fleece or something.
Agree - take them all out to lunch/dinner. Or if you’re not all in the same city, like my people, I do Amazon gift cards. Of course, everything is relative because if you have 10 or more direct reports (I only have 3) then maybe something company related, like others have mentioned, would be less expensive.
Would not give them anything. Remember your kindness toward them sometime when it matters - like annual raise season or bonus season.
I understand the theory here, but when I buy my Team gift it’s coming out of my personal money. Which is something I have a lot more control over than bonuses and raises. I fight for those too, but I don’t feel that it should be one or the other.
I usually get my team something from the company, Stanley mugs, this year yeti tumbler with company logo, something universal and consistent among team. You don’t have to, but it’s a nice gesture. My previous managers did bath and body works stuff, hand soaps and candles
That would very much depend on the context. In my experience the company generally provided a bonus, or may have had a standard Christmas gift that was given to employees. However, some managers will give out things such as gift cards to members of a team. But there's really no general rule about it. As it's already so late, if you were going to give something it would probably have to be gift cards at this point.
Check with your HR department because there could be a dollar amount limit that you can give - otherwise it could be taxable.
I have seen gift cards - chipotle, Starbucks, etc. bag of Christmas chocolates, mugs, etc.
If you just do holiday cards, at least write a message in the card, don’t just sign it.
How many people on your team? Does any other manager get their team gifts? Did you get a gift from your manager before you became manager?
Assuming you are all in the same office, take the team out to lunch. If not, give them a full or half day off.
Can send a nice wine or champagne
My managers always got me something and I appreciated it, so I always get my team something. A nice bottle of wine, some nice chocolates, something like that. I always combine it with a note that is personal and very thankful for the work that they do.
