Warning signs that you’re about to be fired?

Lots of detailed questions about your portfolio, asking to get copies of things you are working on. Increased micromanagement. Offers to review work. Treating you like your IQ dropped 15pts. Correcting things pedantically. Less talk about “next quarter.” Paradoxically, slower responses to communications you initiate.

Build your network well. Keep in touch with your clients. Keep your skills updated. Take some classes on things you want to learn. Do not work 24/7. Invest in yourself on the weekends. Save a bunch of money and invest aggressively. Build passive incomes. Build/Invest (in) businesses. If you find a great opportunity, leave! If you live this way, you will actually never be fired and you don’t care. My others income is much more that my income and this very much possible.

Asking group of strangers for warning signs to being fired.

likefunnysmart

Jokes apart, if you sense it coming then you are probably right. Start job hunting.

like

If they end up firing you, be sure to find a really good spot to hide a tuna sandwich somewhere in the office (if you’re going in) before you head out.

likefunnyhelpful

Woah okay Director Transformation 1, that’s a little too extreme even for me lmao

like

You have very bad performance reviews, been kicked off multiple projects, put on a performance improvement plan, dont get raise more than inflation for consecutive years and or no bonuses etc

likesmarthelpful

Even with great performance, my base pay raises didn’t keep up with inflation for two years and I had declining TC so that’s not necessarily true

Unexpected resources are being brought onto your project to "help out" with the work you're assigned too.

likefunny

@SC1 damn they fired you for 1 bad performance!!?? What firm?

Being excluded on new projects / being left on sidelines

like

When you say ‘Good Morning, how are you?’ and he/she replies back ‘Did you need help with anything?’

funnylike

Yes - you’re right. I really hope that a**hole rot in hell

Honestly, who cares? Key is to not rely solely on your W2 income and then you won't GAF. I have 4 income streams currently.

likesmartfunny

A2 more like “Honestly who cares? I grow all my food at four different locations so I am not dependent on RESTAURANTS”

Left out of critical meetings, everyone is short with you especially your manager, people stop talking about the future around you, you get a junior employee / peer to shadow you who asks a lot about how to do your job, they encourage you to take vacations

Ouch

Polish up the resume in case. Was definitely on the list more than once in my career but somehow avoided the walk out. Be prepared for it. Know who your first couple of phone calls will be to - personal or professional. Take time to absorb it and have a plan to action

like

Lack of comms from managers and leaders. Deletion of meetings with you.

like

Did you make a huge mistake recently?

likefunny

If you’re being managed out by folks potentially acting in bad faith, document everything and walk out of that dumpster fire with a generous severance. The job market is hot and a few lousy managers you may have at the moment could be inadvertently helping you score a payday.

smart

No one else laughs at your jokes

like

Documentation. Every managed exit is a potential lawsuit, they will document any issues in your performance to prevent this.

Improvement plans

When you ask to meet about promotion discussions and they respond “lol”

My wife was informed a few weeks ago that she would be laid off as of end of year. She signed the paperwork and will be receiving a decent severance due to her tenure there. Now the company is saying they may have some other work for her to do for a few months and they could extend her contract if interested. If she says no, is she still eligible for her severance since she already signed her paperwork?

Partners: How do some partners get fired? I know that on the surface it is due to their performance, but i am curious if you have any data points or observations on any underlying drivers. I work for a global firm, and though most partners I know are lifers, i personally have worked with a couple partners who were counseled out. They were seemingly good, competent consultants good at structuring problems. They cared about junior consultants. Didnt see any issues with clients..

Need advice - working less than a month. I recently moved to industry as VP role from audit. I realized that workload and responsibilities were way more than I expected and the company fired so many people ( vps and svps) and wants me to replace 3 VPs work for the year-end. I worked all wknds just to figure out if I can compete the work or not, and concluded that it’s beyond my capacity. I was not told this during interview, and the culture is very toxic as well.
