We have a few new hires, mostly Gen Z, and one of them goes by they/them pronouns. I heard them say that they don't want to work under their manager because he never addresses them with the right pronouns. I spoke to the manager about this, and he said he isn't doing it intentionally; he's just not used to using they/them as pronouns for a person. As a team player, I want the new hire to feel accepted, but also want them to understand that the manager just needs some time to get accustomed. How would you intervene?

Insane. People didn't even get my name right when I started working. I can't imagine being uncomfortable based on someone not using random pronouns that I decided to designate.

I was thinking the same thing 😂 I can't remember anybody's name and I don't expect anyone to remember mine.

I’m struggling to understand why so many people are so offended and outraged at being asked to make a very small amount of effort to show basic respect to a very small group of people who have truly experienced more than their share of persecution in recent years. Trans and nonbinary people exist and have always existed. Biological sex is not a binary, there are real, proven, genetic variations and there are absolutely variations in how people experience gender. This is not a problem! We can all handle the tiny efforts needed to make everyone feel welcome and respected for who they are - and this goes beyond gender. For example, it is reasonable for people to expect their colleagues to pronounce their names correctly too, even if the name is unfamiliar and it requires effort to get it right. And just in case anyone is wondering, I am a cisgender woman (assigned female at birth, always identified as female), Gen X, from Texas.

likefunnyupliftinghelpfulsmart

I am non-binary.
I think that my own community is pushing this thing too far for several reasons :
1 - Non-binary is NOT trans. I am not trans. I do not desire to change my body and I don't think my suffering is even close to that of a trans person. Period, full stop.
2 - There is a HUGE amount of cultural appropriation at play that is almost never mentioned. Non-binary cultures are 18 and counting, and we're asking our society to fake it as if it was always a thing in the West - it's not the case and that's not how it works.
Enforcing something by making people feel bad because we suddenly want to play having the same culture as indigenous societies with 3 genders is the PEAK of woke irony.
Also, making people feel terrible about things they don't know/are trying to get accommodated to on purpose is genuinely one of the least kind thing anyone can do.
To top if all of, while singular "they" is indeed a thing in English, other langages like French use lazy mashups like "ielle" which is literally "hshe" (il/elle = he/she).
I refuse for this travesty of "respect" to be used as my pronoun, full stop. It's literally laughing at us.
Overall if you're a trans person then yes this is genuine.
There are also biological variations in trans people.
Personally I do not think that me as a non-binary individual which is how I choose to identify and not anything else as far as I'm concerned, has the right to be this incredibly asinine about this.
It's like a physician always telling people wrong because this and that scientific thing was disproven 24/7 - ok, we get it.
"This table isn't solid is 90% void" cool beans, and it IS true.
But will I try to explain that to everyone all the time? Please end me.
Personally I have tried and figured out that not caring was far better for my mental health. However as I said, I do not experience gender dysphoria so that's speaking for myself and also other enby people who I think may feel the same but won't voice their concerns to a community that has mostly excluded me and misgendered me more than anyone for appearing as male - ironic, isn't it? - and I get it.

My gen Z staff are awesome. Smart. Polite. Professional.

They also understand they are here to get work done & build a career and whatever political beliefs they have are not proper topics for the office

He also shouldn’t have to because it’s his problem that they do not like the sex that they were born with

Most places I worked - being different is not celebrated. Being too different may place a target on you.

It's not a visible target.
You get put onto bad projects, impossible projects or you get made responsible for non core projects that provide no revenue to the company.

Eventually you may move on out of frustration.
Or you may get tagged as a non performer and fired.
Or maybe you will sit there for many years doing whatever job with little to no pay increases.

No company or person will admit to this but happens all the time.

Hi

Doesn’t make sense not to work. Gen Z

Unless there's more than one of you, doesn't make sense.

Simple, if pronouns are a problem, the manager can just call the employee by their name.

We, millennials, were nurtured to prove proficiency before being pronounced at all)

Everything would be appropriate if the manager just said the mental person's name. Avoid the issues and don't even use pronouns.

Who hired they/them in the first place? have you never heard of foreshadowing?!

"They" is plural. It's the wrong choice for anything singular. But what's common now is for everything to be referred to as "they." Including in writing. Including singular, non-person objects. The situation has long since gone amok. It can't be fixed. Time to grind it all up and start over.

They them is grammatically incorrect. But to play it safe it's best to just refer to the person by name.

One thing I'm curious about - why would anyone address anyone by pronoun and not name?
That said, if the manager's trying earnestly, this should likely solve itself.

Loll the job market trash and you worried about names how cares do your job need the money 😭🥀

I honestly don't think "pronouns" has any place in the workplace. This current theme of playing into one's fantasy or mental illness to make them feel "accepted," is ignorant, at best. We need to get back to common sense and science, and quit trying to force everyone into playing a game that is against their beliefs, morals, and religion.

The manager needs to address his error. sounds like understanding of making the related mistake - but hasn’t taken the necessary respect to apologise 121, explain he is actually trying, and ask for forgiveness.
Ignoring it is disrespectful and will make the new hire very unsure on if they should be expected to tolerate this. If it’s a honest mistake- communicate with sympathy to how the new to role feels build a connection and show you are supportive and put something to plan to help this improve. managers are there to get the best out of their team. show support to your team, especially a new, person in minority who likely very much needing manager to show a human side and to make an effort to respect how they wish to identify.
