What does it feel like to be a single parent serving in the military? My squadmate recently separated from his wife but he kept custody of their teenage child. He finds the time to connect with his daughter but I know that it's hard being apart for a long time. I suggested that he requests to be reassigned closer to home if possible but he also has a passion for his current job.

Been having trouble moving on since girlfriend ended relationship 3 weeks ago after 2+ years of dating. There is a certain air of respect you get when you become a military professional. As long as you earn that respect, of course. But I like it, it feels good!

In the heat of combat, there's no second to waste. I've never felt more focused in my life than when I'm holding a rifle, it is like the rest of the world disappears, and it's just me and the instinct to survive.

Does anyone else feel like they have become too utilitarian and objective?

Why aren't there any vegan options in the military besides a salad? I wish there was a way to improve this. I find myself having to settle on vegetarianism when serving.

I brought my guitar to Iraq, it wasn't easy, but I managed to convince my commander to let me take it. I will never forget those days when we played our favorite country songs with my buddies.

Take victories and defeats as equals! Nothing will teach young soldiers more than making mistakes in the heat of battle that almost cost you your life. If you're still breathing, there's something to learn. Listen to it.

My advice: Concentrate on yourself above anything else, follow orders but also know how those orders affect you, serve your country but never forget you are serving yourself first. The objective is not to die honorably but to survive dutifully. What else would you add?
