Austin is a fun young professionals city
Dallas and Houston are not the same thing. Dallas is more of CPG & Financial Services city in terms of industries. Certain circles are also very high-fashion (home of Neiman Marcus)
Houston is more chill and more international. Lots of O&G and Healthcare industry. Historically the Houston economy has turned upside down when the oil market crashes. Houston food is also better than Dallas.
If you just want the basics at an affordable price, I’d look at San Antonio. It’s smaller and less exciting, but very diverse since it’s a military town and easy to the basic shopping, movies, lakes, trails, etc., and again, it is one of the most affordable large cities in the state.
Lastly, I’m from Austin and would not live there. It’s dirty, crowded, and pretentious about being weird. The traffic is also atrocious. Dallas & Houston are bigger but have better traffic. The only good thing going on in my opinion is F1. Don’t recommend.
Houston is a dark horse. A hidden gem.
You really have to live there to appreciate its benefits.
I concur with the San Antonio recommendation, especially since you mentioned wanted a home with a big yard. You might consider Helotes, Spring Branch, Bulverde, or Timberwood Park to get that nice home. All are within 30 minutes of a variety of nightlife and restaurant options, and Uber/Lyft accessible.
The issue with all of the 4 cities in TX is that in the burbs you’re going to be surrounded by families. If you’re not planning to have kids, you might consider a part of town like Tobin Hill, Terrell Heights, or Mahncke Park. You’ll get a yard but not a sprawling one, but be withing walking distance of a lot, and have many more couples nearby without kids.
Houston is similar in terms of the suburb/urban breakout and affordability. The vote for Houston is the airport has such great accessibility for international travel. There’s lots of great outdoorsy stuff to do in Houston, but you’ll find yourselves driving 45-60 minutes to access them on weekends.
Dallas and Houston are basically the same thing. Austin is younger, trendier and more expensive. They are all hot as hell but it beats the hell out of a chicago winter.

Dallasite here. For your criteria, I would recommend Austin.
Fort Worth - right next to Dallas but less crowded and nicer, imo
If culture, diversity, and food are key- the answer is Houston.
If music, swimming, and hipstery lounges and fashion are key - the answer is Austin.
The answer is never Dallas.

From Houston and lived in Austin for the same amount of time before leaving Texas - from what you guys are into, all 3 sound like solid choices but if you weigh outdoors activities higher than clubbing and big house space then Austin is the best choice. You can move further out of the city to find your yard and space as well since it’s growing so much. Friends there are having a great time settling into their first homes and that airport/routes to the airport have been developing over the years to attempt to match the convenience of DFW and IAH
For what you describe - owning a home with backyard - I think DFW is your best bet. Lots of reasonably priced homes in the suburbs that can give you the space you want, and drive into the city isn’t too bad.
Austin home prices are spiking through the roof, but it’s awesome for having lots of stuff to do (if you’re willing to have a smaller home).
I’m less familiar with Houston but it’s so humid there I wouldn’t willingly put up with it, haha
Houston or Dallas are easy places to buy homes and settle down on that salary... but you have to be willing to fly or drive to get to good outdoorsy stuff.
Austin. But you will have to live 45m + from downtown or even further out if close to Domain. I would look as far north as Briggs, liberty hill, Florence, or Leander to find something affordable with the 180k income and that you like. The market is crazy so move fast and be prepared for upsets. Can put you in touch with a realtor who recently sold my buddy a home in the hills if you want.

You missed the boat on Austin housing. And it’s slowly turning into mini-California (in a bad way). Go for Houston or Dallas IMO

Sounds like Austin is the place for you, in terms of outdoor activities and occasional clubbing.
Dallas or Houston, however, would offer you and your husband more house for your money. Dallas and Houston are pretty much similar in terms of COL, types of activities, and so on... Houston has been seeing a sharper increase in crime lately though (anecdote).
Both Dallas and Houston will offer you a better selection of large airports to support your traveling needs.
In terms of food, I personally believe Houston has better (and more culturally rich) food than what you'd find in Austin. Austin has a wider selection of fusion food, but it is yet to be refined and mastered as it is in Houston. I cannot speak to Dallas, as I have not lived there.
Suggestion -- live in Austin for a year and plan extended weekend trips in Houston and Dallas to try and gauge where you could see yourselves settling down.

I would say Austin (I currently live there myself) but housing is pretty unaffordable right now. Maybe rent for a while while you and your SO increase your income to be able to comfortably afford a house

I grew up in TX and I could not move back BUT if I did and I could move anywhere, I would move to Austin. It is laid back and has a lot of unique opportunities for activities. If school district isn’t an issue you can look west Austin... peck around Lake Travis area.
Dallas has a rat race feel that I couldn’t overcome. Houston weather... hard pass. All of the cities are generally fun, but I just can’t. I do miss that Tex-Mex though.

You can find outdoorsy things to do in probably any city. I’m from Dallas and think it’s great, but if you like hills, then I agree with others that San Antonio or Austin might be better. The Texas hill country is very beautiful. You can get their from Dallas in 3-4 hours though, so still good for a weekend trip. Dallas has tons of lakes, good food scene (and getting better all the time), and direct flights anywhere. Austin and San Antonio are smaller (but still big) cities.
If you want a quirky Austin vibe in Dallas, check out bishop arts area. Lots of gentrification happening there. A house near White Rock lake would make it easy to walk around the lake, paddle board, etc. (different area though).
