I left my last position because I didn't get the sense there was any room for advancement ahead of me. And by moving on I'd likely get more money. In interviews I avoided sounding too negative (or greedy), and talked about how I'd learned what I could and wanted to be involved with more engaging work and all that. I'm sure the people doing interviews know they're getting a version of the story. But it's expected, to some extent, that we're putting on a performance.
The real answer is very different from what I explained in my interview with my new company. Last company, everyone was out for each other, waiting on mistakes to report to management, toxic everything, it was awful. In the interview I wanted to explore an opportunity and company that better aligned to my values. I would love to talk bad, but it isn’t professional and comes off looking terrible on you.
No, I was straight forward with my reasoning to leave my last job. The new opportunity was amazing and I honestly could not pass it up. So I was straight forward with both my previous employer and my current employer through the entire recruitment, hiring, off and on boarding processes. I don’t there were any hard feelings between anyone.
Have not left my first position yet… 4yrs now… I’ve been close.

I left because I knew it wasn't a good fit for me. I'm thankful I found something somewhere that was.
Of course
I left my last position because the environment was toxic and it was really taking a toll on my mental health. I definitely did not say that in my interview though. I told them I was looking for a company with better growth and upwards trajectory which technically is true.
