Not just for managers. Audit has low pay because of low audit fees. Banking and law have both successfully increased fees over the last 40 years while accounting had not.

I’m a first year audit manager. Excluding my milestone bonus, I’ll clear $165k this year with 4 years of experience in MCOL. With the milestone bonus I’ll be at $190k. Not bad imo
I’m talking TC, which includes a 20% bonus in there. I’m making an assumption that I’ll get the highest bonus, but I think it is likely

What kind of work do they do? There’s a lot of people outside of accounting that work long hours and don’t get paid a fraction of what they get paid.

This may surprise you, but not all jobs are created equal. Less complex jobs are paid less. And you could be doing the same job for less money just depending on employers.

They are compensated for the value they bring. A monkey can do most of it. The only valuable parts are where judgement comes in which isnt often - planning really.
