Why do people take remote working so seriously? I understand it’s a preference which is great but we’ve been interviewing for a position lately and our agency personally prefers to work in office, we don’t force anyone but multiple candidates have gotten noticeably offended when we tell them that. Like if you don’t want to come into the office then that’s fine. Go find a place that allows you to work how you prefer. It’s your choice 🤷🏻‍♀️

Because people are sick of going into an office only to be less productive.

likesmartfunny

You can hit the cannabis in the office if you’re discreet 😎

Decades of studies prove that open office plans make workers less productive. Want to know one of the main reasons why most of us are more productive working from home? Because we all finally have offices.

(I also save almost $500/month on needless commuting costs)

Thankfully a smart answer

Did you make it clear in the job description that the role isn't remote?

like

That’s where you may have gone wrong, as many have suggested here. Mention the office situation upfront and that it’s a deal breaker before you get to the in person interview.

like

The commute is stressful and wastes time. There’s a theory that people that like the office are just going in to get away from kids or unhappy homes/ house shares whereas people that work from home have boundaries and aren’t people pleasers. Meet in person at a team away day not on a rainy cold day in November during the busy run up to Christmas and flu season and keep warm and cosy inside.

like

Brilliant theory. Yes, everyone that likes going into an office is just miserable at home. What with the little scamps messing about and the old ball and chain complaining about dirty dishes piling up. C’mon.

Because it saves the employee tons of money and time! Not having to commute shaves 3 hours off my day. In addition, I save money by being able to cook my own food and make my own coffee. As a Black woman, though sometimes racist microagressions occur, I don't have to be in the line of fire in an office. Remote is the way to go and there is no turning back now. Workers will not put up with it.

likeuplifting

All of this so right on. And for the CFO’s out there, they’re also seeing more productivity and an opportunity to cut unnecessary and bloated line items (5 floors of office space) off the expenses.

I remember early on in my career, remote work was almost unheard of for a creative. The most you could get in terms of flexibility was 1-2 days to WFH. The mentality was that you HAD to be in the office to get things done. Then COVID happened and, suddenly, miraculously, people found that you COULD effectively (and collaboratively) work from home. Suddenly, for many people in many ways, work-life balance was actually a reality. I can understand why people don't want to RTO. I don't.

like

People getting real heated in this thread haha. First of all, I’m not going to apply to a place that requires me to be in office 5 days a week. Flexible/hybrid, I’ll consider. Being offended that’s the potential employers policy, during the interview, is pretty funny. And you dodged a bullet. If I heard that in the middle of the interview I’d keep on with the interview and inquire should the interests continue. All in all, I see your point and agree with the OP.

like

Have you ever played a mmorpg or game that is online and puts you along with others on a 'team'? I respect your companies stance but I find those that haven't ever formed relationships and processes online, usually have the most difficulty accepting its possible. Plus eod, when it comes to high performers in roles like developers etc, and salaried employees just my opinion but bringing them in the office (by choice or force) ends also sacrificing many of their most productive hours.

like

I would probably make an exception for the developers. They can work remote. The goal is to give the work place personality.

It's a Buyer's Market in our World for the first time in a while. Your agency brass is adhering to a work model that will limit the quality (and quantity) of your candidate pool.
This Seller's mindset is short-sighted; you may want to consider some flexibility regarding such a rigid stance. Makes you guys sound like control freaks...not a good look when trying to attract strong, capable talent.

It's real competitive for employers out here. Good luck.

like

Yeah I don’t see why candidates would get offended. I appreciate the honesty so I know what to expect. I was talking to a few places recently and with one, the team all went into the office often so with me needing to be fully remote I knew that might not be a good fit. Another shop the whole team worked remote so that felt like a better fit. People can do what they want and that structure will naturally form.

like

I think it’s difficult this day in age because so many people moved due to rent going up and cities shutting down. I moved to Austin for a job that ended up not even having an office. Thankfully now I’m at a new agency that is fully remote for those hired out of state. I’ve had several recruiters reach out to me for different jobs, but all are needing candidates in the cities their located in. It’s $5000+ to cut leases, which most agencies can’t afford that plus moving stipend. It’s not just about working remote. I’d love to go back into an office, but I can’t financially afford to move to the city where offices are. That doesn’t mean I’m not a hard worker and could/would move there once my lease is up.

like

Do you transparently state that your office is in-office only? If not, candidates may feel that is an option that's negotiable. I've seen job listings that purposely vague about WFH/in-office to test the market sentiment. There was a job description that stated it was "remote", only tell me they wanted people in-office or hybrid during the interview. Since WFH is a benefit that many workers are looking for now, if your company doesn't offer it, it's prudent to state that in the job description to save everyone time.

like

I once had “yeah this is remote, but you need to be based in X city because we require you to show up at the office once a week” 🤯

like

It's a great debate. Personally, I do like being in the office and around colleagues. I work in Marketing so there's a big element of creativity and collaboration in the role which is much easier in person. Saying that, I have a 1 year old daughter, so having 2.5hours back in my day (from the commute) that I can spend with her is always going to come first.

Again, everyone's priorities are different and I absolutely see both sides of the coin.

like

It may help if you let candidates know that going to the office is a way to collaborate and get together but employees are welcome to leave at a normal time and complete any work they want at home. After previous roles, one of my fears is having to go to the office and being stuck there until 8-10pm when I could easily work at home.

like

Better than being stuck at the office. But I guess my real point is that it keeps people from being held around the office without work in case something comes up. Not uncommon for people to have to stay until 6 on a Friday just because.

like

And that’s exactly what people are doing.

like

Beautiful and well written you young Copywriter 3. And young was a compliment not to be taken chronologically.

like

At this point in work culture, it IS offensive that an agency that can do its work remotely is trying to get people in an office. It's become clear that it's merely a power move and unrelated to productivity. Agencies need to grow up or move on

like

In person collaboration is where the good stuff is - screens and distance are fine for some types of work but drawing at the same white board is gold.

like

Yeah for people that are so set in their ways that this is the only way they can collaborate it is harder to see anything differently

So what’s the agency afterall? Do you still have the opening?

If you mean the job post then no. It was just a post we made on LinkedIn to our network. Not an official one on the job board

What would you do for that “Unicorn” that wants flexible hours?

Applied 9/1 and on the applicant portal the status still says “in progress.” I got a great internal referral, but I’ve not reached out to the hiring manager. 😬 I know there were a few hundred applicants — what’s a realistic timeline and what could I say to the hiring manager if I reach out to them.
