I've been trying to move into the tech industry for financial analyst type roles instead of accounting, and have recently reached out for a few zoom meetings to ask for career advice from finance directors in tech.

What’s your take on Zoom/teleconference deps?

This is a serious question-are folks really taking Zoom calls wearing a nice shirt and just boxers? I have never walked around the house in boxers, so why would I work from home like that. It doesn't make sense.

There’s was someone here last year that developed an eye tracking application to integrate into zoom calls so that you maintain good eye contact even when you’re not directly looking at the camera. Would love to hear how that person is doing with their project. It looked very promising.

We have some Singaporean colleagues, and their chat in our Slack has been... less than PC. Is there a way to ask international teams to follow Western standards of politeness regarding questions such as race?

30 weeks pregnant; started feeling sneezy and sniffly last night. Tested positive this morning, went home. First question from the boss: can you work from home? Finally gave it up at 4:15 and passed out for 2 hours. Woke up to a few missed calls and a WebEx at 5:15 “hey are you ready to go over this?” No. I feel like awful. That’s what. Lol. Welcome to industry accounting with COVID. The books don’t close themselves.

I don't know what it is, being in these little zoom windows is exhausting and also I'm suddenly very nervous, breathing rushed etc. I just had a sabbatical and returned.
How do I get a hold of that? I like personal meetings, I thrive on face to face, body language cues, have a very expressive body language, I need to be remote right now but it is not doing me any favors.

Got to know from my IT friend that few firms esp big 4 and IT consulting they have some spy software which shows that how long screen was stuck on one page of an employee. Is it TRUE?
Also any tricks how to play with MS teams to stop showing away? Like jabber and slack use to have feature of showing away after 45 mins etc , is there any feature for MS Teams?

MS TEAMS sucks!! It’s like that chugalkhor monitor of class! Telling how long person was away and all.
Jabber/ Slack time was best atleast I could manually adjust it to “show me away after 30mins” unlike this MS TEAMS!

ID folks - it’s no secret that it’s getting harder and harder to bill hours because insurance companies make so many things that reasonably should be billable, unbillable. And now with Covid there is no billing for court and deposition travel as we do mostly everything over zoom. Don’t you think billable hour quotas should be lowered to account for this? My firm’s quota was designed when you could bill .25 minimums and would have to travel and wait in court for 1.1 before a .2 hearing.

As a man (with the originally-issued equipment), I pee sitting down, so that my hands are free to reply to emails and slack messages. It’s just more efficient.

Have a zoom interview tomorrow at 8am. Got exposed to covid and trying to power through, but I feel like total shit. Is it ok to ask to postpone at this point?

I’ve worked at places that all have different holiday policies. EA has at minimum a nice 10 day shutdown from Christmas Eve through New Years. It’s great to know that there will be no slack messages or an exploded inbox to come back to while away. I’ve been at other studios that only give you Christmas Eve & Day and New Years Eve & Day and then the rest is up to you to request for PTO and this is obviously the suck.

Happy Almost New Year, Folks. If you ever thought, “maybe 2022 is the year I put my portfolio together or try my hand at creative” good news: winter/spring session AdHouse Classes are up. We are on zoom, so can be from anywhere.

Boyfriend tested positive for Covid, we live together. I’m negative, but keeping my distance. My younger brother also got it, and he lives with my mom. So Christmas is cancelled. Anyone have ideas on how to still celebrate on your own? And no zoom calls. I hate those.

WWYD if one of your DRs said they're working today but has been unresponsive on emails and slack, only for you to see on social media that they're actually on holiday?

They're quite new on the job so I'm still navigating communication with them. I don't want to micromanage, but they do have major projects that they're responsible for. If they didn't have things due I'd be all for it no questions asked - I'm a big believer of shutting the laptop down and leaving early as long as the work is done
