2nd year here that got f***** over by a colleague. We were supposed to work on a memo due in two days but she went completely MIA. She knew I was going on vacation this week. I told her I’d be working through the weekend so she could bring the memo across the finish line. Now I have to crunch on my vacation. I hate badmouthing people (and I don’t plan to) but the idea that she can get away with blowing off a colleague without any sort of consequence pisses me off. Thoughts on how to handle?

Send the memo to the partner yourself, use the word “I” not “we”, and don’t cc her

Good mentality to not be throwing others under the bus, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get all the credit for something you did entirely yourself.

One thing to do first might be to make sure she’s not like.. horribly sick/injured or something…

like

Email your part to her, indicate you’ve done XYZ as discussed, copy partner, include a reminder about your vacation unavailability, keep tone positive, bounce.

This is the way.

I would’ve not done more work and let the partner follow up with the associate. The partner shouldn’t be bothering you cause you’re out of office. Then the associate has to explain why they didn’t put in any work. If the partner comes after you, then you’re at liberty to explain what happened

Yeah, no. I doubt the partner cares about this bullshit but will be mad at both if it doesn’t get done.

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

What is the advice on what feedback to leave for a peer who really sucks at everything y'all have worked together on? It's about the time where everyone on my team requests feedback from each other and I'm nervous for it coming up. My manager knows that everything I've worked w her on I end up doing 90% of the work when it's meant to be split so it is a known issue. We're both at level 3 so are genuinely peers. She seems like a nice person but i have 0 positive work feedback tbh

Should I just quit the legal field?

I have been a paralegal or legal assistant since 2010. I have worked for small and large firms and a TPA. I've worked in L&E, PI, and ID. Billing hours gave me nightmares. Right now I'm in a hybrid paralegal/LA position where I'm responsible for all of the docketing and supporting the managing partner and 1 associate and their 90+ ID caseload. I make a lot of mistakes everywhere I work. I feel so incompetent. Should I just abandon this career path?

What’s the best way to deal with a partner that prefers working solo? For context, this writer I work with conceptualizes by himself, emails the Account team, gives deep input, and makes decisions for us without consulting with me (his “partner”) most of the time. While I appreciate his proactiveness, I feel excluded, limited, and without much room to co-lead the work with him. I don’t know how to bring this up without sounding like I’m b*tching about it.

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)?
