30 F, post MBA, big 4 experience, currently in a director at a multi billion dollar company. My personal goal is to become a CEO by the age of 40. What would you recommend I learn, do, etc., to reach my goal? Trying to come up with some milestones for myself and key areas to master, people to build relationships with. I get that everyone’s path is different, but if there was a 10 year path to CEO what do you think would be steps along that path?

Search funds are exactly what you are looking for. That gets you a shot at being a CEO of a real company ($5m-$50m revenue) within a couple years.

There are some people who have held the CEO title at substantial companies lurking around here. I'll keep an eye out for one of them.

There are no Fortune 500 CEOs today 40 or younger who didn’t found the company. Best way to get CEO is be COO somewhere that’s #1 in its field and then take the CEO spot at another company in that industry or be CFO at your target company and wait for the CEO to retire.

Get broad based experience, and especially strategy, finance and marketing. Develop great people management skills, make people want to work for you. Identify your competencies and identify what industries and size of companies are you targeting. And build expertise in that / identify a path

And most definitely learn how to apply technology to your industry. CEOs must be well versed in Digital and Technology.

Ensure your job is in a revenue center and not cost center.
Ensure you take responsibility of a new and upcoming product with growth potential and lead that.
Build strong relationships across the Org.
Look at paths of successful people (example Satya N.) and emulate as much as possible.

My goal isn’t to be a CEO but at least a P in few years and then scale up to a practice lead. Fingers crossed.

Search fund or found something.

You’re not getting from where you are to the CEO seat at a publicly traded company in 10 years.

What’s TC look like for director of corporate strategy? One intermediate step would probably be a role with PnL ownership.

What do you guys mean by search funds?

I’m pretty sure CEO isn’t a 10 year path. I’d set sights on executive committee in 10 years and then from there it’s kinda a crap shoot. You’ll have to start applying for CEO roles and need to be c suite already

Start with being a GM of a smaller BU. Need P&L ownership. Depending on the industry, need sales or product experience to drive growth and revenue.

Clarifying my post: if you wanna get to ceo it takes getting to svp of a large company or evp of a medium or large company first. This is the way then use a search firm.

🐠, need opinions/advice. Persistent recruiter asked me to consider having an exploratory convo with a company for a VP role even though I’m not looking to make a switch. That casual convo has morphed into two interviews this week, one with an SVP and EVP and one with the global head of the practice. It would be a $65k bump in salary. Worth going through with it? Should I mention that I’m not actively looking to leave my current job? Been here 6 months…

I currently work as an APM at a FAANG company but recently received an offer to join an MBB. I’m very excited about the role but didn’t realize I’d need to take a pay cut when I applied (~100k base + ~20k bonus + ~60k equity vs. 90k base + 10-20k bonus). Considering that I currently work 40-60 hours/week, I’ll be making significantly less per hour at the MBB. I’m very interested in the opportunity but also don’t want to make a poor financial decision early in my career. Thank you for your time!
