A few weeks ago I had a boss make fun of me on a call for looking “gloomy” and he wouldn’t let it go. He kept yelling in a joking way at me to ‘cheer up’ in front of others on a zoom call. I wasn’t being rude, just quieter that day, as I was going through a mental health issue. . It’s been eating at me the way he bullied me on call - should I say something ? I feel a 55 year-old man should’ve learned not to do this by now... don’t know how to come at it without seeming whiny WOC...

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). I’ve doing this for a good number of years. I think I depleted almost completely my interest in this business. When I’m out of the office or during the weekends I get into a “leave me alone state” and don’t want to know anything about the office. I actually just want to get in the agency, do the best I can within the time I have available, and get out. In a business where “the most committed wins” this is not an ideal mindset, but I’m done. There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.
