After all of the COVID19 stuff is over, do you think our industry will change how it operates? More telecommunication/video conferencing at home office. Still fly to sell work and important meetings.

Nope. This is a people business. It doesn’t work without being there in person especially for challenging strategic problems

like

No. This is a temporary adaptation (although people will use remote tools more and better). Just because fish are kept in an aquarium or bred in captivity to manage a crisis doesn’t mean that they will not go back and thrive in the open waters after the crisis passes. They will also do better at making trips between the aquarium and the open waters.

like

@A1 have you ever had to sell more work?

like

No way - it’s definitely less productive and clients are much harder to get a hold of lol

like

This is just temp. I know that me being remote makes it hard dealing with my one colleague- he can ignore me and the IMs if I am not in his face.

Ok, I’m gonna say this. Schools should open. Now hear me out. My wife is a family doctor, she is working insane hours, she is treating covid patients, and there is a lot of days when she has to stay at the hospital without coming home. My neighbour works in a local grocery store, so he has been at work since the Day 1 of lockdown. So if you need medical help, or want to eat, it’s ok for those people to be at work, but their kids have to stay home? Cont’d >>

There is almost nowhere to find reliable bonus information on Canadian firms. I’ve heard of year end bonuses ranging from 10-50% this year (not including Covid bonuses). Let’s start a thread posting year of call, rough billable hours worked and bonus as a percent of salary.

5 year call. 1850 hours. 10%.

⚠️Toxicity Alert ⚠️

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

One of my relatives just asked me if turmeric will defend against Covid...noooooo

Looking for a home office chair…I need something really ergonomic/comfortable but given the visibility of the office in the house the wife wants something stylish. She keeps calling all my ideas ‘gamer chairs’ even though they’re definitely not. Anyone have any chairs they really like that may be worth looking at? I feel like I’ve looked everywhere (Steelcase, Herman Miller, humanscale, Haworth, xchair, etc).

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
