For my pcos ladies on metformin, interesting news article. Be careful out there. The good news I hear is that metformin leaves the body pretty quickly so in 2 days you won't have it in you anymore. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/victoriaforster/2020/04/05/researchers-warn-that-covid-19-treatment-t

If cutting out carbs cold turkey is difficult, perhaps try to gradually ease into it. Download an app (MyFitnessPal, Carb Manager) so that you are tracking everything you eat and just slowly work your way down . Initially I would have a bowl of plain oatmeal for breakfast and not have anymore bread/grain for the rest of the day-definitely helps to get you through the work day
I am a reformed carb addict — you can do it! I stepped down, I’m sure I would have failed otherwise. The first few weeks, I allowed a bread-type item (usually a pop tart) and up to 4 small cookies. I carried them around with me because of the sudden sugar “pangs.” Eventually, I was only on the cookies — then, forgot about them entirely. Now, I can taste more flavors than before and the cookies taste disgusting. It’s super weird.
Once you dramatically lose the carbs, your blood sugar is more stable and the cravings dissipate. I still eat a shred of sugar almost daily (extra dark chocolate), but I don’t turn ravenous. I did find that keeping sugar to below 5g at a time helped. As for carbs in general, I try to keep that to 7g per meal, since that seems to keep me stable.
Also, when you have the opportunity to cook, check out recipes that use almond flour as a bread substitute.
OP what do you mean by carb addiction? Just trying to gauge the level. Is it like one bite of something carby and you can’t stop? Or just that your snacks and meal choices are heavy carbs by default
@WM - heavy carbs by default, but I do eat absentmindedly and those are mostly carby things too. Trying to switch snacks to at least fruit, but I know even that is high carb
Gotcha. In that case I definitely second what SA1 recommended. Tapering carbs down will help you avoid that physical/mental hurdle of missing carbs.
Another trick was that when I first started, I didn’t watch calories, just made sure to stay under 20g net carbs and tried to only eat when hungry. Once I got the hang of that and got past very light ‘keto flu’ symptoms, then I worked on lowering my caloric intake. Also, sipping broth or tea helps me avoid the absentminded eating as well.
Remember that it’s totally okay to take baby steps - in fact many people have more sustainable success by making incremental changes to their lifestyle. So don’t get down about swapping out sweets for fruit! Slowly change to lower carb fruit like berries
