Wife’s company sent out a mandatory employee survey. One question asked if they live with with any coworkers. Only choices are yes and no. Is that an appropriate question? And is it even legal to ask that?

You forgot the Exclaimation Point!… Toshiba…. 🧐

Are they launching a carpool service or what? 😆

They already have this info in HR, it’s how you get your W4 and benefits. They don’t need a survey. If they can’t analyze their own data they’ve got bigger problems.

likefunny

Yeah…. Fire the Excel guy… Unless their business is picking up day laborers in the Home Depot parkinglot at 4:30 every morning I imagine a mere SORT of the address column would solve this fairly adequately!…🤣… however!… not actually funny as I’m actively trying to get as many anecdotes as possible on this very subject in hopes to negate it in the future so reach out if you have any other!

like

Definitely none of their business. I just wouldn’t fill out the survey. Mandatory is a subjective term sometimes

like

Sounds like a case of HR gone wild.

like

Don’t do it they are setting her up it’s not anonymous trust me

like

Definitely agree, never anon

like

Mandatory surveys are usually anonymous. I just wouldn’t do it.

I don’t know if it’s legal, but if two co-workers were roommates, why is that anyone’s business?

likesmart

They can ask, you don’t have to answer. Make them follow up and ask why they want to know. They won’t follow up.

like

Might be mandatory to do. Isn’t mandatory to answer truthfully.

likefunny

Or completely. Skip that question

This came up before for me and it ended up being that they don’t want people in the same household working together on the same team. Kinda’ like if you work with a family member, and them wanting to have them managed by different people.

like

It might not feel like it if you are three new associates living and working on separate projects. But I guarantee the minute there is an age or level difference and all of a sudden you’re living with the senior directly on your team… Yeah you might wanna separate house and work

Asking about coworkers living with you is not protected generally. Asking about familial status is protected federally.

like

It’s best to just keep HR left on read. They can’t hurt you if they can’t talk to you.

Sounds like a case of wtf that wasn't run by HR

Maybe they’re asking because of like roommate situations? Either way I don’t know why that would be any of their business but not sure about the legality

Exactly good perspective

It’s never anonymous and so weird for them to ask that!!

Why does a company need to know?

It could be for health insurance/benefits reasons but regardless, it is creepy.

Truthfully none of their business. Surprised their law department didn’t vet that.

Yeah this is so random! I wouldn’t answer and anon is never anon

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Leadership seem to not want to hear the truth so people tell them what they want to hear and if you don’t middle management gets pissed at you. I am seriously thinking about looking somewhere else. My question is how do you answer the “why are you looking to leave” question without bad mouthing your current company?

Moving from a boutique (<30 employees, MBB competitor) to the strategy practice of a Big 4. Have only worked for boutiques in the past, so I’m expecting there to be some major differences in terms of working style.

What are the major differences and ‘watch outs’ you would point out to me? Could be anything from culture, to red tape, to compliance etc.

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. I know he was the provider of the household and his wife didn't have a job since she was raising three young ones. Needless to say, I had to take off because I felt terrible, sick to my stomach. How do you deal with firing guilt? Is that a thing? I can't help but feeling like I did something wrong.

Thoughts on “special” salary grades. I just found out the VP I was offered is not a grade 12 like most comparable roles (verified). Also not an 11, but an 11A. Slightly higher than an 11, a good bit lower than a 12. All due to the fact that it’s a leap from my current position. Why should that matter…..shouldn’t it pay what it should pay if I am selected, rather that curving down towards my current rate?
