FMLA dictates they have to move you to your same previous role of a role similar with no reduction in pay. I just returned from FMLA so a bit familiar with it. But they do have to notify you directly about any changes to your scope of work if that happens.
It's legal as long as you're still returning to a similar role with no loss in compensation. HR will put you somewhere else that makes the same amount, and someone else will take your position. It is perfectly legal as far as I'm aware, but I would reach out to HR again to see where you're going to land.
Yep, looks like others have already covered it: your role may change, but your pay must remain at least the same. If your role is a demotion or affects your career trajectory, there isn't legal recourse, but if I were you I'd come prepared to negotiate for something in line with your goals in case they do that.
